Restaurant Week experiences (2011)

Has anyone had a great RW experience? So far I've been to Lavendou ... it was fine, didn't knock my socks off. Food was better than the service though. I can go into more detail on the menu choices if anyone's interested ...

  1. Went to EddieV's in Oaklawn.

    Menu was very good considering a simple entree is close to the Restaurant Week 3 course price. It was the first day of RW and they seemed a little frazzled by the volume but the server was excellent and made sure we had a perfect dining experience. I had the chowder which was good but I would have preferred the mussels (they were out). The CM 4th course was two very large blackened scallops. Very tasty. They also ran out of salmon but offered any fish on the regular menu as a sub. I chose the sole which was very good. Wine parings were a reasonable 5$ per course if purchased for all courses. They were half pours but was really enough for me. You could purchase extra wine by the glass as well.

      Thanks for the review--I will bear Eddie V's in mind for next year. Of my 5 RW experiences this year, Pappas Bros. was the best. Best lobster bisque I've ever had ... chunks of lobster, soup tasted of wine, butter, and (we thought) clove--plus a kick from an unknown source. A bit of delicious mystery is never a bad thing. Nice bacony salad, great filet (so much better than last time I was there), and very nice chocolate-peanut butter cake (this was a supplement item). Very nice service. All the staff are very well trained ... it's always fun to watch people who aren't fazed by anything ;)

    2. With a dining group, Nick & Sam's. Every aspect of the evening was Excellent!
      With a dining group, St Martins. Very comfortable semi-private room. The food was good. But, too salty!

        OK, I'll bite ... I'm surprised to see St Martin's here ... it was my least favorite RW experience. Service was good, ambience fine (I guess most romantic restaurant in Dallas = darkest), but I found the food distinctly lacking. Only thing I really liked was my taste of Champagne Brie soup. I don't even want to talk about how bad the foie gras was. I was confused in advance by the wildly conflicting reviews (this was my first visit), and of course when a restaurant's been around for 35 years, some of the reviews aren't exactly current. Sounds like your experience was different ...

          I said the food was good not, great. It wasn't my choice to go there. I was part of group that made the dinner plans. Mind you, other than being over salted, the food wasn't half bad. But personally, I wouldn't return on my own volition.
          The brie soup was very good, though. Probably their best offering.
