Top 5 Bay Area Sandwiches?
Hey all,
I'm on an ambitious gastronomic quest and would love a little guidance from some locals. You can help me by answering the following:
If you could only have five more sandwiches in the Bay Area for the rest of your life, what would they be?
Please try to limit them to sandwiches that we could all purchase (i.e. not something that your grandmother makes once a year). Otherwise, you can be fairly liberal in what you decide to count as a sandwich - burger, taco... perhaps even a pork bun if you really feel strongly about it.
Feel free to give a bit of justification for your choices where appropriate.
Thanks in advance!

After reading the other thread about http://thelocalbutchershop.com/ their daily sandwiches always sound amazing...Berkeley is kind of a drive for me so I haven't been there yet, but the comments on here make that place seem like it's well worth the time.

re: Bunson
I wouldnt drive there for the sandos alone. But once in the area, even if not buying more stuff at LOCALBUTCHER, can always hit CHEESEBOARD PIZZA and/or STORE and/or GREGOIRE [same parking location], or LA BEDAINE [pretty easy parking, under 10min drive away], or BERKELEY BOWL, BSB etc.
I'm my opinion their sandos have not suffered much from being pre-fab ... and I've eaten a few hours later. They dont have a giant amount of slaw like the BSB FRIED CHICKEN etc to turn the bread into a wet sponge. Although I dont think I've any of their sandos on a baguette.

Star Grocery on claremont is hands down the best "deli" type sandwich you are going to find. People like to rave about Genova but Star uses La Farine rustic bread and only top quality cold cuts. Keep in mind, I'm not reviewing some high end sandwich from a restaurant, I'm talking about a $6.50 sandwich that makes you wish you were in New York.
I normally go for the GodFather.

Sounds like another magazine article to me.
I apologize, I see from posts on the LA Board it's a school project.

re: happyhoney
i tried Little Green Cyclo near the beginning of the year and it was not a good Banh Mi at all.
very unbalanced flavors. too little meat, too much Maggi or Soy Sauce, too little pickled veggies, baguette did not have the nice crispy crust and soft inside. i didn't finish it.
hopefully they have improved.

All from food trucks in the Bay Area.
I had some really great sandwiches from Eat on Monday. They use Acme bread, and the Kurobuta Belly Sandwich is my current favorite.
Any Steamed Bun from Chairman Bao's.
Sam's Chowdermobile's Lobster Roll. Soft toasted bread with butter and lobster.
Omininja's Banh Mi. Softer bread than traditional banh mi, and right amount of meat and veggies make this a winner for me.-----

re: Armoise
Oh man, that Rock Cod sandwich at Wood Tavern is amazing, I'd forgotten about that one. I went a few months ago determined to get a sandwich other than the pastrami and tried that one, and couldn't believe how great it was, I need to go back for it soon.

Pretty much any sandwich from the Sentinel, I've never had a sandwich there that wasn't fantastic (but especially the roast beef and the chicken salad sandwich). The egg salad sandwich from Il Cane Rosso. The pastrami from Wood Tavern.

re: vulber
You sure? The last time I passed by a few weeks ago it looked like they were simply building out the deli area to make it a bit more presentable. I would be surprised if the closure was permanent.
edit to say: yelp says they are moving somewhere else in the neighborhood. anyone know the details?
