Expat NYers returning. With a baby....

Lived in the east & west village for many years; left under great duress. We're returning for a long weekend, and our 16-month-old son's first real trip to the city. He's very well behaved and a great eater. We want to show him our "home" (and we are just dying for some good food!). Where can we go that we'll love and he won't offend with his presence? We're open to all kinds of food, but hopefully at least one Japanese meal and at least one Italian.

FWIW, we'll be staying in Battery Park City but can move around well (south of 23rd street). Thanks!

Well, we plan to spend an affernoon in Sheep's Meadow, but I'll definitely have a hard time dragging my husband north for dinner. So I think that's a yes -- below 23rd St please.

Osteria Morini is extremely cramped and loud, though, so not sure I'd go there. Especially if bringing a stroller (not sure if the OP is).

Yup, that's the one. We will probably have a stroller with us but it will fold up and stow away easily.

No idea when you moved, but Manhattan is more kid friendly then ever. Near BPC, I see a lot of kids in Walker's, so keep them in mind as a convenient choice.

I recommend calling any place before you visit and making sure they stock high chairs. We've had a couple of unpleasant surprises with our 18-month old.

We've also found DBGB, Peel's, Balthazar/Schiller's/Morandi/Pulino's extremely kid-friendly.

Also, there's now a Shake Shack in BPC!
