Galveston

Need recommendations for Galveston Island ASAP. Seafood preferred but looking for best dining available regardless of genre or price. No chains please. Also, just Galveston Island. I know about Gaido's and Clary's and Mosquito Cafe. Also, has Simp's reopened? Thanks as always.

For a casual inexpensive meal of fresh seafood, I love the Gumbo Bar.

Benno's is good, and fairly priced as well

My all time favorite for upscale seafood is Saltwater Grill on Postoffice Street - they have these amazing kettles that make their gumbos, cioppino and mussels fresh to order, incredible salads (signature dressing, a must have) and the specials are to die for. Service is excellent, ambiance is perfecto. Enjoy!

Mi Bella's is a nice place!

it is DiBella's, and as i recall from my one visit there about 5 years ago, it is good. A nice little neighborhood Italian place.

I plan on hitting Simp's tomorrow. Got a tip from the great Robb Walsh and had dinner at Sonny's Place this evening. We all loved it. Dive type bar in a neighborhood near the Strand District--19th at L Street. Same family has run it for 60+ years. We tried it all--burgers, spaghetti with meat sauce, Tex-Mex spaghetti (covered in chili), muffalatta, and jumbo fried shrimp. I dare say the shrimp are the best on the island--I have had Gaido's and Clary's and Sonny's were tops. This is a MUST destination for any true chowhound. It is very disappointing (and unfortunantly says a lot about the Houston board) that this place is seldom, if ever, mentioned on the Houston board.

I'm in Galveston frequently but forget its existence. I will hit it up in the winter when oysters are back. You should mention it is cash only. And beer only, except for the bad wine. And a dive bar, as you say, which is why it is a favorite of the med students, but is not for everyone. Seems like visitors we suggest restaurants to all want good food AND a view of the Gulf or harbor. I guess when you asked for best dining available, things like view, ambiance and service all factor in to responses. Great reminder though.

Yes, I probably wasn't clear enough about best meal available. Some who write that will not appreciate Sonny's Place. It IS a dive. It takes only cash (or, also, gladly accepts checks), and I would agree that the wine is so bad I would consider it "beer only". For those chowhounds, however, who are truly seeking the best meal available regardless of location, price, or genre, this may very well be your spot. I am going to post a trip report in a few days that will comment on Sonny's and Simp's which is now open on Broadway. For soul food, Simp's is worth the drive from Tyler to Galveston just for lunch. It is that good.

Looking forward to that! Simp's just opened in the past few months I think.

In all fairness I think of Galveston more as being part of the Texas board, but not sure you'd have any more luck there. Houston is moving up to be the 3rd largest city in the US after the last census. Even with the what I'm guessing is 7+ million folks in the area you only see about 10-20 people who post regularly to this board.

All that to say that the really unfortunate part is that you are then limited to our experiences & those of the occasional one off poster. I for one rarely make it to Galveston anymore, so your post & the replies have been interesting reading. Thanks!

I second 901 Postoffice. It is a fantastic restaurant with great ambiance. I have also had several positive experiences at Olympia Grill on Pier 21, in addition to good food it has a nice harbor view.

Best dining: Rudy & Paco's, South American fare, seafood available. If you are there on a Thur, Fri or Sat night, try 901 Post Office Restaurant at the same address. Elegant fine dining. Olympia Grill (Pier 21 location) is very good, offers seafood and a great view of the harbor. Casual chic atmosphere.
