Three night s in Red Deer, AB--dinner suggestions?

It's just me but I prefer to skip the room service and hotel restaurant dinners, if possible. I'm game for most anything and I'll have a car. Thanks!

  1. Momo Sushi (can't seem to find a website for them, nice write up here:http://thereisalwaysroom.blogspot.com...)

or Shiso Japanese Restaurant shisorestaurant.ca (the later being located right next to Red Star

Red Star for Western Chinese/Dim Sum http://redstarrestaurant.ca/

La Casa Pergola http://www.lacasapergola.ca/hours-of-... for red sauce Italian that isn't from a chain.

    Bistro Siberia for Russian: http://bistrosiberia.com/

There's also the new Cities Gastropub, which used to be Restaurant 27. I haven't been there since they were Restaurant 27, the quality of the food is probably the best in town... service was always a bit odd: DH and I order both apps and soup and apps came out, not 6 minutes later soup is here. No room on the small table for both, and one gets cold while you rush to eat the other. Desserts however... need improvement. Story of the switch to the gastropub format here: (cached because you have to be a subscriber) http://webcache.googleusercontent.com...

For a quick sandwich I suggest you check out Big Bend Market - the bread could be better (their wheat bread sticks to my hard palate every time) but you can get fantastic house made bison smoked meat, venison or elk pastrami and whatever toppings you like. call ahead 403-341-2344 since they often sell out of the bison/game deli meats.

There is also It's All Greek To Me which is consistently good as well as Las Palmeras across the street which John Gilchrist called the best Mexican restaurant in Alberta. For Chinese, Red Star is probably your only choice.

Thanks Dean, I'd forgotten those two :) I like Las Palmeras - they do a decent enchilada. I don't totally understand the ambiance at least on the right hand side-it's as brightly lit as your average fast food place when the bar side is almost the polar opposite. Oh, and avoid the chiles rellenos; they're factory made (either heinz or costco) battered 1/2 jalapenos with cheeZe filling-reminded me of Arby's jalapenos without the sweet sauce.

John Gilchrist is crazy, Las Palmeras is the WORST mexican restaurant i've EVER been to. anything but authentic, stale yellow No Name tortilla chips from Supertore, etc. etc. etc. I'm trying to find the review I wrote about this place the one time I tried it.

          Las Palmeras = Julio's Barrio = CRAP

For me a recommendation from John Gilchrist is the kiss of death - a restaurant to be avoided at all costs. I too have found his "Best" recommendations are my 'Worst ever" food experiences. I have not been to Las Palmeras, so I do not speak to that - only to John Gilchrist recommendations which I don't trust.

      2. thanks maplesugar and carlitguy---i appreciate the suggestions and links!

I definitely plan to check out bistro siberia and the gastropub. i love dim sum but it's best shared and i'll be alone.
