Friend visiting from NYC!
I've been out of town for a few months and now I have a friend from NYC coming to visit me this coming weekend. We want to go out for dinner downtown and perhaps party afterwards....where could you recommend? He's a foodie also and would like to see what the Vancouver food scene has to offer.
Any ideas, friends?

Get the party started right off the bat and go for an izakaya crawl, if you search for it, you should find the thread somewhere on this board.

re: bdachow
Last week I went on a Gastown crawl, mostly for drinks, but we ate at a few places too. Started off at Guu Otokomae for our first dinner and some beer. Great way to start. Moved across the street to the Pourhouse for cocktails (they have a good little snack menu too). Walk a little further down Water and onto Carrall for L'Abattoir for drinks. Their kitchen closes at 10 though, so we just had a cocktail before some pizza at Nicli. Then, more cocktails at the Diamond to close out the night. If you started earlier than us, you could hit the kitchen at L'Abattoir and even make it to Alibi for craft beers too. Judas Goat is another option for snacks. Lots of great spots for a night out within walking distance.

Are you looking for a new place? Then go to Hawksworth.
It would help if you were a little more specific about what kind of dining you want to do with your friend.

re: Anne M
I keep hearing about hawksworth, guess I should look it up! I guess I'm looking for something slightly trendy but someplace that doesn't compromise style with quality. I was thinking maybe boneta in gastown or perhaps r.tl in yaletown or even the helm? I've done a lot of izakaya & he's the kind of guy who rents out abc kitchen for his birthday bash...not looking for something too pricey, though....
