I'm leaving Saturday for a road trip from Tulsa to Chicago's far northwest suburbs. I'm hoping to stop at non-chain, local restaurants for meals. I'm looking for recommendations in Illinois. They need to be cheap, NO CHAINS and no more than a 5-10 minute drive from I-55.

Thanks for any recommendations!

Speaking of Route 66 places, you might want to consider stopping at the Cozy Dog Drive-In in Springfield. This is the home of the corn dog. A tasty piece of history. http://www.cozydogdrivein.com/about/

The Ariston Cafe is a good stop in Litchfield, about 30 min, south of Springfield. A Route 66 place.
