My folks, who reside a stones throw from and frequent Cerritos, introduced me to Cara Mia Gelato Tropicale, a gelato/dessert counter located within Jeepney Asian Grill on South St. just East of Pioneer. There are your standard gelato flavors -- straciatella, strawberry, pistachio -- but, the "tropicale" flavors are the stand outs, namely mango, jackfruit and a killer Sans Rival, their gelato-ized version of the decadent Filipino-Spanish Cashew and buttercream pastry. I'd never had, let alone seen, it anywhere but, here.
Cerritos Mall, just down the street, contains an outpost of the chain, Melt. The counter presentati was gorgeous but, oh, if only the taste matched the look. A spoonful of Dolce (sic) de Leche tasted more of powder mix and emulsifier than anything resembling frozen Argentinean creme caramel.. It got tossed.
Had I wanted powder mix and emulsifier, I would have kept it old school. Cerritos has a Dairy Queen (I can't bring myself to calling it 'DQ') as well as an A&W, both located minutes from but, miles away in comfort from the awful Melt.

There are, of course, more "ice cream" joints in OC, some of 'em are within 10 miles, but these 2 are the closest, AFAIK.
