"Familymoon" in Miami

My husband and I are taking our four children to Miami (two his, two mine, from previous marriages) to celebrate our wedding next week. They range in age from 12-19, and a few of them aren't adventurous eaters at all. The rest of us are foodies. I'm trying to find restaurants that will please us all, but the foodies don't always want to eat at the type of placeswhere a burger is readily available. On the other hand, we adults don't want to do chain food, period. We are from Boston.

What are some good, but fun places for the six of us? Despite the chain factor, I figured Joe's Crab Shack and Benihanas would please us all, but casual dinner or lunch place suggestions would be appreciated as well. We may ditch the kids one night for a romantic meal, and suggestions for that meal would be great, too. We'll be in the North Beach area.

Thanks very much.

  1. I'm not sure if you mean Joe's Crab Shack (a chain which has no locations in Miami, the closest is Lauderhill) or Joe's Stone Crab (which has satellite locations in Las Vegas and Chicago but is not exactly what most people would think of as a chain).

Assuming you mean the latter, I think Joe's is now closed for the season until October. If you mean the former, I can't say I really have any advice for you. Benihanas is Benihanas. There's nothing particularly Miami, or adventurous, about it.

For places that can appease both adventurous eaters and finicky kids, I might consider ->

Michy's - Biscayne & 64th St. - high-end and high-quality with both "adventurous" dishes (foie gras, sweetbread dishes are always excellent) and more comfort food type items (steak and fries, fettucine carbonara).

Bourbon Steak - for my money the best steakhouse, and one of the best restaurants, in town, plus the kids can order from the "Burger Bar" menu and get what I think is also one of the best burgers in town.

Red Light - not nearly as upscale as the first two - in fact, kind of divey - but a good focus on local ingredients, a bit of New Orleans flair (the chef's home town), and you can still get a burger, ribs, or a "bratty kid grilled cheese" (really what it's called on the menu).
