Pickled/preserved Herring in Toronto (NOT sweet)

Hi. I am looking for pickled or preserved herring in Toronto that is not sweet and not in a cream sauce. Thanks.

Mendel's in Kensington Market has both matjes and pickled herring fillets in trays on the counter under glass. Very nice. Don't know who their supplier is, though.

I'll jump on the Daiter's bandwagon. They're located north of Lawrence, south of Wilson on the east side of Bathurst. Excellent herring, smoked fish and cheeses.

And, I just want to add that this is not the packaged sort. You can purchase it in salt, oil, or a sour cream sauce, if memory serves. They will cut up the whole herrings for you, while you wait. Or, you can buy them already cut in pieces.

At Metro 620 grams jar pickled herrings, ''Feature Food' brand, thick cut herrings, European Style, around $6.00 a jar.

Starsky's has a million different types of herring, I was looking at it all this weekend.

I highly recommend Viking brand matjes herring. I used to be sold at Highland Farms but I haven't seen it there for the last few months. The No Frills on Centre Street carries it and you'll likely also find it at most eastern european delis.

matjes herring - yum yum :)

Highland Farms has matjes herring from Poland for $13/kilo. It looked good in the sealed package, so I bought it. No sugar added.

There is a salty but really good matjes herring at Grodzinski, I think at the Bathurst location. It's soft with great flavour. Sold by weight. Expensive but worth it.
