The side bar makes my mac freeze

SourberryLily Aug 11, 2011 12:37 PM

Took awhile, but we've pinpointed the new freezes on my mac to pages in Chowhound.

Specifically the ones where the side bar appears, with the "tweets, facebook" and social media plugins.

Even without the crashes i wouldn't want that sidebar, it's useless to me and slows loading down. How can i deactivate it?

There is no official means to disable the share bar. How did you determine that the bar was causing the freeze?

It happened twice upon loading a Chowhound Thread. Upon investigating the issue, it seems to be related to flash and plugins.

I have noticed a distinctive slowdown since the tab was introduced. It's bad enough that my iPhone on 3G network is faster at loading a thread.

If this happens againi wont look at chowhound from work anymore. Can't afford my computer crashing on me (and this mac NEVER crashes).

There's a way to make it disappear, although it probably won't make TPTB very happy.

Get an adblocker like AdBlock for Safari, there are different ones for different browsers, and use the customizing options to remove the sidebar. In AdBlock it's as easy as CTRL-clicking on the sidebar, choosing the "block this ad" option and moving the slider until you don't see the sidebar anymore, and Bob's your uncle.

I hope this doesn't get me banned from the internet.
