Superb diner food

Obviously Ricky's has been mentioned here before, mostly for their "famous" apple pancake. We were visitors in San Diego last week and seriously ate most of our meals at Ricky's. We didn't even like the apple pancake!

Our three-generation group was very happy with the pleasant room, the cheerful and efficient service, and the wide variety of menu choices.

We all salivated for the chicken-fried steak, which the menu boasts is "best in San Diego." We'd say it was the best anywhere: tasty, fork-tender, deeply satisfying.

We kept coming back to an omelette with shrimp, avocado and Jack cheese -- all very fresh and the perfect doneness and texture, which is not what we'd have expected at a simple diner.

They were only too happy to grant my FIL his wish for well-done french fries: deeply browned and crunchy without being burned.

I'd have given this place 5 stars but it wasn't perfect. The chorizo & eggs was overdone. We thought the apple pancake was sloppy and gloppy. The coffee wasn't great.

But the egg skillets were yummy, the fried chicken was out of this world, even the green vegs were nicely cooked: still a bit crunchy and not swimming in butter.

Thumbs up, Ricky's!
