Fisherman's Catch in Wells?
1st time poster/long time reader. Just wondering how the Fisherman's Catch in Wells has been lately. We've been going to Wells for years and it used to be the best fried seafood in the town. We were last there 2 years ago and felt it went downhill in quality (I think there had been a changeover in managment). Has anyone been recently? I am mainly looking for fried clams. I am used to the Clam Box and Farnham's so my standards are pretty high. (We've also been to Bob' in Kittery which is very good but wanted something closer to where we are staying).

We went to Fisherman's Catch two seasons ago. Loved it. We went once last year and it was not good. The steamers were full of sand, the fish and chips were fishy and fries greasy. We didn't go back last year and haven't gone this season.
I would love if someone could report on the quality as of late.

I had the same experience last year, so sad. Have been hearing good things about the clams at York's Best Seafood and Roast Beef on Route 1 between Ogunquit and kittery. A true shack, with a mediocre lobster roll and (egads) frozen instead of Maine shrimp.....but the clams are excellent. Have you tried the fried clams at Mikes? Or the maine Diner?

My wife & I went there last September and we loved it. I started with a cup of fish chowder; which I must say was the best fish chowder I've had. Chock full of fish in a just-right creamy base. After that I had the whole belly fried clams that were delicious - not greasy, nice flavor, no sand. My wife had a fried haddock sandwich which she said was excellent. It looked very good from my side of the table - a very large and thick piece of haddock dominated the bread. After we got back to Vermont I raved about it to a friend who was going to Maine with his girl friend; a few days later he called me from the restaurant to thank me for the recommendation – they loved it too. I can't wait to get back there next month.

I found the lobster roll at Fisherman's Catch to be a bit fishy. The fried clams, haddock, shrimp, scallops were fine quality--and the serving size was enormous--but they lacked taste. I prefer Bob's in Kittery for fried seafood.

We have been longtime Fisherman's Catch fans - so much so that we've made it a tradition to be there on their first and last days of the season. I've noticed this year that the food is not quite as fantastic as it has been in years past. Lobster roll was disappointingly meager. Seafood plate, nothing really made my mouth sing happily. I hope they can find their way back to stellar fish because the servers remain some of the nicest in town. I will say, also, that going "off hours" (rather than at lunch or dinner peak) gets you better everything.

I believe the owners (husband and wife) recently had a baby, so they may not be as "involved" as before. He is the chef. Just a hunch.

In Wells, Captn Hooks Fish Market was just mentioned in another thread. I can't comment on any of the above, just wanting to link commentary on the same locale. G'luck.
