We are finally making our virgin voyage to Jar on Saturday. I hear that pot roast is compulsory for newbies. Is this true? Have also read raves about the steaks. Are there particular saucings that will change my life? Are the yams my best friend? Do we want to sit somewhere or not somewhere else?

All you Jar salty dogs - tell me what you would get if you were falling in love with Jar all over again. We will be a foursome.

Thank you kindly

Yes, try the yams...they are amazing. I also like the fries (ask for lobster bernaise for dipping), and the brussel sprouts..

Don't miss the banana cream pie for dessert!

i loooove banana cream pie, but i was pretty disappointed with the version at jar. the server said it was thier signature dessert, but i don't think i'd want to sign my name to it. the crust was waaaay too hard and tough. the custard was runny. i swear i've had better banana cream pie at a greasy diner.

but aside from the dessert, everything else we had for the main dinner part was excellent. i loved the chopped sirloin - when the server described it, i thought of a hamburger on a bun, but when it came out, it was sooo not a hamburger. it was delicious. :)

I've enjoyed the pot roast, coq au vin, scallops, brussels sprouts(really good if they are your thing), all potato/yam sides, butterscotch pudding if available(darker and denser than most).
Best of all, a selection of probably 6 Gigondas wines, among many other wines, with a depth of selection with fair prices. One of the better lists in town.
As to seating, since you will be a four, get farthest from the front door, preferably along the easterly wall of the building. A two will generally be seated behind the host/hostess station.

At a recent brunch they had a special of pot roast hash with eggs - a mind-blower. Their standard way to prepare it is to scramble the eggs into the hash which makes for a gooey mess. I ordered mine poached easy and laid on top and the dish was a winner.

When I was there last Saturday, they had a beef bourguignonne (sp?) special -- there was only one order left -- our server was kind enough to tell us as soon as we were seated so we could stake our claim. I didn't get it, but the guy in our party who did practically licked the plate clean.

I had one of my favorites, the ribeye. Others had my other favorites, the pork shank and the pot roast, and another had scallops. To start (I always eat way too much at Jar), I had a fantastic, garlicky English pea puree with Humboldt Fog cheese served with crostini. SO good. Everyone loved everything.

I guess the Jar version of banana cream pie is a matter of taste -- no, it's not a conventional banana cream pie, but many people love it. They didn't have butterscotch pudding, but I had the chocolate, which is great, too.

I'll second fries w/ lobster bernaise, the yams are incredible, too. You can't go wrong w/ any steak dish there.
