Publix does turn out a halfway decent baguette -- BUT it's not the one labeled French baguette.
Go for the one called "crusty white loaf" -- it's not the same, but it's the closest I've found to a crusty French baguette. If you ask, they'll sell them to you frozen, too -- then you can finish them off in the oven at home -- helps a lot if they're hot from the oven at dinner time.
(for those familiar with them, it's roughly the same as the "mini-baguettes demi-cuit" that you buy in the bread department of French supermarkets to bake at home....it'll never be the same as a fresh baguette, but it'll do in a pinch -- or to tame a good jones.)

Oh, and Fresh Market and Earth Fare do have fresh baked crusty breads. You'll have to check for the baguettes.

re: crewsweeper
@crewsweeper: thanks for your suggestions. I had tried Fresh market some time ago and found loaves of the right size and shape but not the taste and texture, but I will check again. I will try Au Peche Mignon which is close by also. I did order some from La Tienda but hope to find a local source.

i was pretty horrified when i first moved to florida from new york, and went to the supermarket in search of a loaf of italian bread, to serve with my dinner of linguini with white clam sauce and a salad. no such thing as a loaf of crusty italian bread in florida, i was told. the woman at publix bakery laughed and said oh you must be from new york. yeah, i'm from new york. and the soft loaf of sliced bread labeled "italian sandwich bread" doesn't work for me. the closest i have been able to come is the bread they use for cubans, which is pretty tasteless. good bread, along with good pizza and good chinese was left north of the mason-dixon line upon my relocation. just another price to pay for never having to shovel snow again.
