Carlsbad Aqua Farms...

I'm thinking about getting some mussels and oysters from them this weekend at the Carlsbad farmers market.

Any of you Hounders done the same, and if so, are they good?

Thanks in advance. :)

  1. I buy from Catalina Offshore, which sources from Carlsbad Aqua Farms, so maybe prices for you will be better. The mussels and oysters are excellent.

That's great news, Cathy! I hear they're a dozen for 10 bucks or something like that direct. (Or was it a buck a piece?)

Is Catalina Offshore the place that sells all the sashimi grade fish?

The ones at are $15 for the dozen of Carlsbad blonde. They sell sashimi and the fresh really is the best you can get. Sign up for their email to be alerted about weekend specials...but if you can go during the week, you can avoid the crowds and get fish that was alive last night.

It's not a fish market- no lemon slices, parsley or glass cases. You walk into what looks like an office...

That's awesome. Thanks for the tip! I'm going to sign up for the email alerts now... :)

They're a dozen for ten bucks at Hillcrest on Sundays. I've had the Blondes and the Lunas at Oceanaire happy hour, and they're consistently good.

      2. Their fresh-shucked oysters at the LI Mercato are a regular treat for me... The selection varies from week to week but it's always a decadent treat to enjoy some at a outdoor market!

Also picked up their mussels from Whole Foods Encinitas for a dish I needed and they were just as expected. (WFM in Encinitas carries both their oysters and mussels, so other WFMs might be worth checking as well...)
