Visiting your lovely city next weekend - Restaurant suggestons?

daisybell Aug 3, 2011 10:06 PM

So I'm heading to PDX with 2 friends next week - I'm game to eat anywhere but my friends are not. One is your stereotypical Scotsmen a total miser and would cry if he had to spend over $25 on a meal (yet of course he has a huge appetite), the other has dietary restrictions, is practically a vegan and prefers healthy meals. Is there anywhere we can eat where we will all be happy? We will be staying in the Nob Hill area so any dinner recommendations for that area would be good.

Any good Malaysian or Mexican restaurants?

And finally any food cart recommendations? What/where are the best ones to hit?

Thank you kindly!

Ooh also I need to stock up on some Vodka and Gin - I've never actually seen a liquor store in D/T Portland - where do I go for good stuff at cheap price .. Costco?

Wow that makes it difficult, especially in that part of town.

Red Onion is a Thai place which offers both "standard" Thai fare and northern Thai dishes on a special menu. I think the "standard" stuff is just OK, but their northern dishes are authentic and really good. So you could have something new, it wouldn't be too expensive for the Scot and there will be plenty your veg friend can eat (they're pretty good about vegeterianizing many of the meat dishes, too)

Sandwichworks isn't fancy, but it's great sandwiches, cheap and there is at least one vegan one.

I can think of plenty of great cheap happy hour menus but they won't have much vegan friendly, and plenty of places with some great vegan dishes but they won't be so cheap. I'm drawing a blank, maybe someone else can do better than me.

There are no Malaysian restaurants in Portland. Your definition of "good" Mexican depends where you come from. Certainly not in the northwest, unless you're willing to go to Beaverton. The best Mexican downtown is probably the La Jarochita cart.

Hit the food carts downtown around NW 9th and Alder. It's the biggest pod, and has some good ones - Nong's, People's Pig, El Cubo, Eat This, and quite a few other great ones. Most of them are only open for lunch. Small but quality is the pod at SE 12th and Hawthorne - Pyro Pizza, Potato Champion, Whiffie's. It's open until 3am every day except Monday. If you can be bothered going to SE Belmtont and 42nd (43rd? 44th? around there anyway), that pod is great and open for dinner - Lardo, EuroTrash, Sugar Cube.

As just explained on another thread, Oregon is a control state, so liquor costs the same everywhere. Your best option is Pearl Specialty in the Pearl - it has the best range and a lot of local spirits, if that's what you're looking for (speaking of, if you're here on a Saturday, hit up some of the distilleries - you can do tours and tastings and it's cheap and vegan).
