Your Favorite Drinks 'n' Apps spot

Saturday I have an out-of-town guest coming to visit and after we see a matinee of "War Horse" I wanted to maybe find a bar where we could grab an afternoon cocktail and snack before heading back to the 'burbs for dinner with friends. A little decadent girl's afternoon out.

I want suggestions of any kind. It doesn't have to be UWS. I will take us on a subway to any neighborhood that has a place that's worthwhile.

I'm looking for anything fun. Something with a great outdoor patio, a cool view, or just a cool vibe where we can sit and drink and have a little bar snack. Anything you like just throw it at me.

  1. Ok, so 2pm showtime + 2h 40m show time means you'll be ready to have a cocktail and a snack around 5pm?

Best combination of small plates and excellent cocktails I think would be Pegu Club. Love their deviled eggs. They open at 5pm.

The current summer menu is also great. I'm quite find of the Greenmarket Melonball (gin, cantaloupe, Calpico, Pernod mist, fresh lemon). And you can't go wrong with the Pegu Club classics like the Pisco punch (pineapple infused pisco with grapefruit syrup, lime syrup, and lime juice), The Jamaican Firefly (a dark and stormy with lime), or the Old Cuban (champagne mojito).

    1. I rather like the oysters (both raw and fried) and shrimp corn dogs at the Mermaid Inn. You could probably snag outdoor seating on the UWS and cool off with a glass of cava. You should also consider Ardesia.

      1. My favorite place for drinks nowadays is Robert at museum of Art & Design. The view is beautiful, good and not too expensive cocktails and great service. They let you lounge and are not pushy about you buying more drinks. Really good for someone who doesn't drink too much like myself. They don't have too many options on appetizers, though. But the ones I had (some croquettes a while ago and flatbread pizza) were good.

I have the same question but was looking to stay in the West Village area before drinks. Looking at The Spotted Pig, Employees Only and Tavern on Jane. We like a good and interesting cocktail. Any suggestions or input about my choices?
            Thanks,

Spotted Pig is known more for food than drink, the cocktails are decent to good, but not great.

For cocktails and food, EO is really the only serious cocktail bar doing both. Nearby, Little Branch has excellent cocktails but not food. I can't speak to Tavern on Jane.

Depending on time of day, the wait at Spotted Pig will be long. And you will really need to order more than one "app" in order to occupy such hot real estate as a table. Though I don't know this for a fact...)

Eh. Mediocre at best. Sexy, dark, night time spot though.... Lots of nooks for canoodling! Not a day time place with the girls sort of place, IMO.

Thanks for the reply. I'll scratch Spotted Pig and reserve that for a time when we plan to eat there. I had thought of Little Branch but we were hoping to have before dinner drinks. They don' t open until 7. I know, I know that is early for NYC but we were thinking of drinks more around 5 or so.

That'll be a problem as Employees Only doesn't open until 6pm.

I would walk a little south / southeast and try out Lani Kai or Pegu Club. Both will be open about then and both have good small plates and excellent cocktails.

Yes, that would be a problem, I forgot to check hours. Pegu Club sounds like it would be a great stop. I'll add that to the list and tomorrow we'll decide.
