Ikea Pressure Cookers

Any comments?
I'm Thinking of buying one..

    Same 6qt, $5 cheaper, with 4.5 star reviews by 429 users and 12 year warranty.

    But I'd rather save up and buy a German one just for the peace of mind.

      Just FYI, I think you mean Kuhn-Rikon for the pricey one: they're Swiss.

      Not that there's anything wrong with that... :)

        Nope, I was thinking about WMF or Fissler. ;-) I do want to get a pressure cooker myself, but at the same time I enjoy the long wait of stew making.

        I would take KR too, as long as it's made in a place where human lives are worthwhile. (End of discussion here...)

          I see. Made in Germany is, in my experience, generally a very good sign from manufacturing and design perspectives.

          And since WWII, they've been pretty humane, as well!

          The Swiss, meanwhile, spook me a bit with political conservatism, but they make good stuff, too.

    2. The Ikea cooker (which is made in China) looks like a knock-off of the Tefal Clipso, a French product. I think the Tefal's working pressure is about 12 psi, not the US standard of 15 lbs psi, so I'd wonder if the Ikea cooker is the same. If it's 12 psi, some things will take a little longer to cook (but that doesn't seem to bother the Europeans any!). You should also consider the availability of replacement gaskets.

      If buying Chinese-made stuff isn't an issue for you, have you looked at the Fagor cookers? No jiggly valve, 15 psi, the basic models are competitively priced, and gaskets are widely available. Anyway, whatever you decide, have fun with it.

      1. As others have suggested, there's better/safer stuff readily available. Same goes for yard sale vintage pressure cookers. Who needs a IED in the kitchen?

          Is there any evidence that this pressure cooker is less safe than the pricey German ones?

          As long as it has a safety pressure value, and some sort of interlock that keeps you from opening the lid while there is pressure inside, it should be just as safe - especially if you use it as specified in the directions.

            You first. I have issues with the "safety" of the safety valve on these--too much sample variation on Chinese-made. At best, it blows off under-spec and takes longer to cook.

              Is this from experience, or some written source?

              Another option would be Indian. Compared to Indians, Americans know next to nothing about pressure cookers.
