As many times as I've been to Scoops, I don't believe I've ever tried the gelato there, or even the sorbet.
Tai's talents lies in making creative, inventive flavors come together organically in ice cream form. His talents fail him when he tries just to make good, solid regular ice cream. Try his vanilla sometime and you'll leave nonplussed.
It's like why going to a Cantonese restaurant and ordering dumplings.

What knucklehead made that claim?!
Agreed, it's nothing like gelato.
On a side note, I'm not a fan; the texture of Scoops ice cream is too "icy".

re: vinosnob
Ditto on every point. I find the texture off-putting. The flavors are interesting but the texture is a deal breaker for me.
Give me ultra-rich, ultra-smooth ice cream only. I'm not even a fan of gelato - I find the consistency a bit... chewy(?) for lack of a better word. And too airy. Gelato texture is too much like the cheap supermarket brands with "stabilizers." I've yet to find anything that beats Haagen Dazs for texture. -
