planning my own birthday for tomorrow night

Planning my own birthday gives me stress! There will be just a few close friends- 5 or 6 of us. One is unemployed, one earns very little. I'd like to do something festive, but don't wish to impose an expensive night out on those who are gracious enough to come out, even though they have little. Oh, and this is a last minute request for Monday August 1st. Any ideas? I think a $20 entree is a good price point. No Indian or Thai, please. Thank you, helpful hounds!

  1. check La Sirene, it is BYO and really quite good.... may be over your limit though

A decent pasta place would work too, I don't know what area you're in so it is tough to provide recs.

Sip Sak, a Turkish place in Midtown East could be festive as well

Thank you so much! I must admit that I'm not that fond of La Sirene. Sorry I didn't specify area... downtown, preferably east.

Restaurant Week has been extended until Sept. 5th, and Apiary is one of those that is continuing to participate. Normally, they offer their $35 3-course prix-fixe only Tues - Thurs & Sun. However, I think it is now also available on Mondays. Although it's been quite a while since we had dinner there, I haven't the slightest doubt that Chef Scott Bryan's food is still delicious. Also, Mondays are BYO with no corkage, so that can be a savings for your friends as well.

Note: I would suggest that you call Apiary to confirm that the RW menu is available tomorrow.

        Happy Birthday!

Well, I wound up not making the choice at all. One friend booked us at El Parador and picked up the tab for everyone. Very generous and sweet! El Parador was a good choice for a birthday... the decor is nice and there's some feeling of a throw back to another era that felt festive. Unfortunately the food is not wonderful, but I decided to hang up my foodie boots for the night and just enjoy the event. Hoewever... Monday BYOB at Apiary will be great for a bottle of wine that I brought back from Italy and want to share with a friend. So thank you!!

We had dinner at El Parador once several years ago and, like you, I thought the food was not very good. However, considering the generosity of your friend, you were absolutely right to ignore the quality of the food and, instead, to concentrate on the spirit of the evening.

Glad to hear that Apiary's BYO Mondays will come in handy for you.
