Koo Zee Doo and The Bachelorette Party
Took my wife to Koo Zee Doo for her birthday tonight. When we arrived, the hostess said we could take any two-top we wanted. Since it is an open kitchen, I opted for a table in the back room where I hoped it would be a little cooler and quieter. As we were sitting down, I noticed a row of tables pushed together and figured a big party was coming in, but since it was early, I figured we would probably be done before they arrived.
For appetizers, we ordered the potato and salt cod croquettes and the steamed clams. Both were excellent and I felt the portion size of the clams was very generous. However, just as we were finishing our apps, I noticed three young ladies walking into the back room with wine bottles in hand. One was wearing a little tiara and a "Bachelorette" sash. The word "uh-oh" immediately escaped my lips. As the server began opening their bottles, a few more trickled in behind them and then a few more after that. One asked the server if there was a liquor store nearby and was told that there was a beer distributor around the corner. At that point, I grabbed our server and asked if they could move us into the front room. Luckily, the front room was not full and they put us at a two-top in there.
On to the main course. We shared the duck rice and that was also wonderful. For dessert, my wife had the Bolo de Bolacha, which was kind of like a tiramisu, and I wanted to order the chocolate figs. But all it said on the dessert menu was "chocolate figs" so I asked the server if it was just chocolate covered figs. He then tells me that they are chocolate covered figs, but two are stuffed with caramelized hazelnuts and two are stuffed with chocolate almond. I'm thinking, "you had me at caramelized hazelnuts" and "you need to put that description on the menu."
Both desserts were very good. When the bill arrived, I added an extra five to the tip since our server was able to accommodate our request to switch tables. Ultimately, no harm, no foul there, but I guess it would have been nice if the hostess had given us a heads up about the big party coming in.
My only real regret of the night was that I didn't get to try the pork and clams entree. Since it was my wife's birthday, I let her choose the entree. But there's always next time...
