Any sources for sushi-sashimi-grade salmon near Park Slope?

Miss Needle Jul 29, 2011 01:02 PM

I generally go to Lobster Place in Chelsea for their sushi-grade salmon (better prices than Korean and Japanese markets). But it can be a bit of a pain for me to get to these days. I called Fish Tales to inquire if they had sushi-grade salmon. They said yes. I asked them if it had been previously frozen. They replied it had not been frozen and it's sushi grade because of the way it's been bled and a couple of things that had nothing to do with freezing to kill parasites like how it was caught. He seemed to take pride in the fact that his sushi-grade salmon was never frozen.

It is my understanding that salmon can harbor parasites unless it has been previously frozen under certain conditions. Lobster Place freezes their sushi-grade salmon. According to the man I spoke with on the phone, Fish Tales does not. I'm very hesitant to buy my salmon for raw consumption at Fish Tales.

I've asked the fishmonger around 7th Ave and 3rd Street if they carry sushi-grade salmon. Their answer was no. Any other leads? And I don't have a Cotsco membership.

I'm lazy and just order and have it delivered next day fedex. Catalina Offshore is my go to source for fish for sushi/sashimi.

Thanks bkeats. But I think I'm too cheap to pay for their shipping cost, especially as I really like to order a small amount of fish at a time. I have ordered from catalina before. I couldn't stand being a prisoner at my home waiting for fed ex (i'm not at work during typical delivery times to have it sent there). fed ex eventually came @ 7:30P with my delivery. And while my salmon was good, my orders of uni, toro and yellowtail were not. So I'm pretty hesitant about ordering from them again.

That's too bad that your order didn't go so well. I've been pretty happy so far. Have you tried ordering recently? They dropped shipping to a flat $20.

I will also suggest trying Garden of Eden in Brooklyn Heights. They periodically have sushi grade fish.

$20 shipping on a large order isn't too big of a deal. But $20 on a $20 order is probably more than I'd like to pay. And then there's the whole waiting for delivery thing. I never needed somebody to open a door for me, but I definitely miss doormen accepting packages.

I will check out Garden of Eden sometime. Much obliged.

I bought salmon at Garden of Eden to make a gravlax and it came out well. It's a small-ish fish counter, but if you explain your intentions with the fish they're very helpful.

That's nice to hear. Sometimes smaller places are good about things like that. Wish Fish Tales was a lot more knowledgeable about these things. Personally, I think it's a bit irresponsible that they aren't aware of the parasites raw unfrozen salmon can harbor.

You may want to give Shelsky's (relatively new place on Smith) a call. Not a fish store per se, specializing in smoked salmon & appetizing, but I'd guess he'd be able to get it for you or know where you could go. Or talk to the buyer at Fairway?

Thanks for the leads. Haven't heard of Shelskys so I will check it out soon.

I looked into this a couple of years ago and got some sushi grade fish at Ocean Fish market on 7th ave in Park Slope. I've heard Park Slope Seafood just down the block has sushi grade as well, but only tried the fish from Ocean. It was very good and affordable.

Thanks, but I've already checked Ocean Fish. They carry sushi grade tuna but not salmon -- at least that's what they told me. But I'll check out Park Slope Seafood.
