Antoine's or Broussard's

Planning another trip to New Orleans over Labor Day weekend, if y'all can keep the hurricanes at bay. On past trips, I've always made a stop at Galatoire's, but I thought I'd look for something else in the "traditional Creole" category this time. I will be dining solo, most likely. I'm thinking that I'll do this meal as a lunch rather than dinner (and I will likely have a future post asking for some dinner advice). That would rule out Arnaud's, since they're not open for lunch. So what would your preference be, fellow Chowhounds?

    If your more into history Antoines for sure. But Broussards has the great courtyard tough choice.

        Interesting question.

        We did Antoine's, just pre-K, and were not impressed at any level, though I go way, way back with Antoine's.

        Did Broussard's, but for a major event, and all was great.

        That said, many locals have sung the praises of Antoine's, post-K, so that changes things quickly, and possibly dramatically. Still, Broussard's hit on all cylinders (some months post-K), I would hate to overlook them.

        Wish that I had dined at each, last week and for individual meals - not an event for 250, as I might have better recs. for you. For me, personally, I'd opt for Broussard's, but would have my heart hoping that Antoine's did a fantastic job for you.

          I've given Broussard's three chances in the past few years, and it always failed in some notable way. the last time was the owner himself, who seemed quite unconcerned with our issue. I hear they were good when Broussard actually owned the place. probably will never be back.

          Antoine's has some good food, which happen to be the apps for us. entrees seem very weak. steak filet was outright awful.

            Can' t remember the last time I was in Broussard's..probably when Corinne Dunbar was still extant.

            An awful steak at Antoine's is rare. That is one thing that is always good and you get to play with sauces (although I don't usually use sauce on meat..but Marchand du vin is a fun break and, of course, bearnaise with lamb chops for time to time but not each bite)

              Ah, Hunt, kibbles and hazelhurst: three of my favorite commentators on this board!! Thanks for ringing in. It now appears (contrary to Mr. Fitzmorris' website) that Broussard's isn't serving lunch, though perhaps this is only for August, and lunch will start up again in September. That will make the selection easy, since Antoine's will be the only one of the three (Antoine's, Broussard's and Arnaud's) open for lunch on Friday or Saturday. The Antoine's website did have a mention of 25 cent martinis, which is another way of spelling "trouble" in my book!

                Don't be distrubed by the $0.25 martini...Commander's does the same thing at lunch.
                If you spend a dollar, take a cab home. Antoine's daily lunches are only $20.11 and that is a bargain. My preference is to lunch in the Hermes' bar and get the trio of appetizers and the souffle potatoes...no martini deal in the bar.

                  +1 on the martini specials scattered over the city, good fun. i also like the apps at Hermes, especially because it has one of the quarter's best happy hours -- $2 beers including Abita and Sam Adams, $3 mixed drinks and wines.. tough to beat!

                  Randy,

                  I wish that I could offer some timely info, especially regarding what will be available during your visit. This is where I definitely defer to the locals, as an ex-pat, living 1300 miles away, and traveling only maybe 2x per year, I am way beyond the curve.

                  Also, and as stated, our last visit to either was some time ago, and Broussard's was for an event. Sometimes, that tells tales, but sometimes it can confuse things. I seldom do reviews of any events, unless I feel that they reflect on the day-to-day operation of a restaurant. For general comments, then I will mention the experiences, but try to qualify them, if they are events.

                  As to the "$0.25 drinks," I rather feel the same way. For me, the draw is the food. I tend to worry a bit. However, if those were $ 0.25 glasses of Ch. Latour '70, then I would probably skip the food, and just go for the wine!

                  I only wish that I had some hard, concrete and directly applicable comments to add, but I do not.

                    I was being facetious about the 25-cent martinis. While I never drink alcohol at lunch at home, I am not adverse to getting a little tipsy at lunch while on vacation. On my last visit, I did imbibe in 25-cent martinis at Commander's and let's just say the streetcar ride back to the CBD was interesting.

                      I was not. I always worry a bit, when a restaurant, any restaurant, has a major drink "come on." I question whether it's because the food cannot carry the load, or if there is something else going on. Probably nothing to worry about, but I still puzzle in the back of my mind.

                        I thought it was a bit of a NOLA tradition (but what do I know?). Presumably, Commander's doesn't need a drink special to attract its lunch crowd. Nor did I witness any bad behavior as a result of the cheap drinks (other than my own teetering walk to the door at the end of the meal).

                          I think that over the last several years, a lot of restaurants have been working on their marketing. Once, that was not necessary, but times change.

                          I see similar around the US, and have even been asked to review "promotions" in "patron focus groups."

                          Lot of folk thinking of how to fill those tables. Lot of scrambling for those dining $'s. Now, I do not like to spend more, than necessary, but admit that I am more caught up with things like the recent Riesling Month promo with special menus and lots of Riesling wine flights at Farallon in San Francisco. That caught my attention. Offers for things like "half-price wine," unless it is across the cellar, or a free dessert with two entrees, usually do not catch my attention. Same for special pricing on a limited menu - just not something that I seek out. However, the various promos are with a purpose - get the diners in the door, and they seem to be working pretty well. For the restaurants, I certainly hope so, as I want them to be profitable and be there, when I next visit.

                          Not being a martini drinker, I would have been one of those teetering patrons... [Grin]

                          i wouldnt worry about it, just a promo. some of the best restaurants in the city it -- Commander's, Bayona, Cuvee, Antoine's, the other Brennan spots, etc.

                          kind of a reverse throw-back to the "free lunch" specials of the late 1800s, credited to New Orleans origin -- whereby patrons spent 15-cents on a drink and got free food. one becomes two, two becomes three...

                  If you've never been to either restaurant, the choice is clear: Antoine's. It's a landmark and a beautiful space. Don't sit in the front room -- although it's lovely, it's all tourists. (Yes, I know you are one, but . . . .). Order one of those 25 cent martinis, a sazerac or a glass of wine, study the absurdly extensive menu, order carefully (i.e., stick to the NOLA basics), soak up the sights, and you'll have a blast. My only question, is why not do it at night? The restaurant shows off more beautifully after dark.

                    Thank you for knowing that even though I'm a tourist, I want to dine with the locals! The reason why certain places on my potential itinerary have been designated for lunch is that they are open for lunch, while others that I wish to try are only open for dinner (or sometimes because of where they are located in relation to where I will be coming from or going to).
