My husband and I will be spending a weekend in Providence soon for the first time. We want to park the car and either walk or take a short cab ride. Looking for recommendations for Friday night , american, french, near the hotel for dinner and after spending the morning on Sat touring Federal Hill, a great place for lunch. We like fine dining but casual places, and often sit at the bar for our meals. Any rercommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

You're a short walk from Gracie's, one of the top 2-3 restaurants in the city. I'm also partial to New Rivers, also a fairly short walk. Tini is a new, small (capacity) small-plate place very close to Gracie's, that has gotten some positive vibe. All are what you can loosely call modern American. Local 121 is a beautiful place, also very close, which is the most "locavore" oriented, but some say it's hit-or-miss there (but they do cocktails well.) If you want more casual, Trinity Brewhouse is pretty standard pub food, but an excellent IPA if that's what you're after.

For Federal Hill there are many options. Your best bet is to enter "Federal Hill" as a term in the search box at the top of the screen. Good food from take-out to white-tablecloth. Read a bit, then ask.

I agree about Tini...it is really fun, and, the food is great. Also, you can walk up to Atwells Avenue...a number of great places. And, then, there is one of my favorites...Mills Tavern on North Main Street.
