Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in DC/Baltimore and Suburban Virginia

Lunch and/or Dinner in Fells Point

A couple friends and I are going down to Max's on Broadway next Saturday (the 6th) to check out an event from 1-3pm. We don't get into the city all that often, so I was looking for some lunch or dinner recommendations within walking distance. Definitely on the cheaper side, although it doesn't have to be dirt cheap, and suitable for diners who may or may not be slightly drunk (for dinner anyway.)

I like Asahi Sushi, BOP, Alexander's Tavern, One-Eyed Mike's, and Ze Mean Bean. I was also very impressed with that new gelato place next to BOP (can't remember the name of it at the moment.)

I did NOT like Sam's Kid and I thought Tortilleria Sinoloa was overhyped (although I'd be willing to give it another shot, as I've only been there once.)

Thanks for any help. Your guidance is much appreciated.

  1. For lunch I'd give Tortilleria Sinaloa another shot, I doubt you'd have a second less-than-stellar meal there.

For dinner I've had good bar-priced food at Riptide by the Bay. Definitely stop at Pitango Gelato (the place you're thinking of) for dessert.

I think Tortelleria is over priced now, I got 2 chicken tacos there the other day and now that they charge for the specimen cup of guacamole it was $7.10 with tax. Try CInco de Mayo on Highland Avenue in Highlandtown, they make their own tortillas too and have much more on the menu, tacos are very yummy and cheaper.

The place right next to the crisis pregnancy center? I thought that was a grovcery store.

        1. re: gregb

that is a grocery store, this is across the street.

        2. re: hon

Highlandtown is definitely not walkable from Fells Point. Thanks for the tip, though.

it would be a long walk, I was just pointing out that there is an alternative to Tortilleria Sinoloa.

On hon's recommendation, we went to Cinco de Mayo last night. Easily the best tacos I've had in Baltimore. (They don't have fish tacos, so Sinoloa still wins on that front.) CdM is sort of a mini-empire. In addition to the Mexican grocery they have across the street at the Highland Ave shop, they said they had like 8 other taco places around town. I don't know how the others compare, but I know there's one at Eastern Ave just sort of west of Little Italy....(very easy walking distance to FP....)

Very glad you checked it, I though the place was really good, I want to go back and try the tortas and quesdillas, etc.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that tacos are served with yummy grilled cactus slices and a grilled small onion, in addition to the more typical radish slices. Very delicious touch!

                  Thanks for the tip, hon!

Did you get the carne enchilada?

                      Do you know their hours?

                      1. re: hon

We got chicken, carnitas, and al pastor tacos. All were outstanding, but I thought the al pastor was a standout. We also will be back to try more. Also, had chips & salsa. The tortiall chips weren't all that special, unfortunately.

Regarding hours, I really don't know, but we were there around 7:30 ish.

        3. If you don't mind a little walk, you might want to check out Darbar, a new Indian place on Aliceanna St. (You could fill up on their good buffet for lunch before drinking.) Also, a bit of a walk, but not terribly far is Johnny Rad's, on Eastern Ave, for dinner.

          1. Duda's Tavern. Casual atmosphere, really good food.

            1. It never gets the love here, but I really like John Steven...they have excellent mussels and steamed shrimp, and I've had great burgers there too...Plus, Resurrection Ale...

              1. Peters Inn on Ann st for dinner.

                1. Second Darbar, had a great meal there about a week ago. I also really like Sticky Rice, although the service leaves a bit to be desired. Try Mezze for tapas!

I think I'm leaning towards Darbar simply because I've been craving Indian lately. Bonus that they have a 15% off coupon on their website. I read they go a little light on the spice, is that true? I don't want my head to be blown off, but generally I definitely prefer my Indian with a little kick.
