First time in Maine
Hi Hounds. My family and I are leaving Southern California for York, Maine for a little vacation and I must, repeat, I must have a lobster roll because I have never had one. Please, a little help on places to eat from York to Portland. I have heard all about Red's and Thurston's Lobster Pound, but I can't see driving that long with two young children. Thank you in advance for all your gastronomic help.
Thurston's Lobster Pound

How young are the kids? Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth has good lobster rolls, a killer view and, depending on the ages of the kids, several hundred yards of rocks to climb on - might be a bit too much for real little ones but my kids loved it when they were young. You eat outside so the kids can go wild.
I was just at Thurstons a few weeks ago. Actually had a very good lobster roll there at very scenic Bass Harbor. Two Lights lobster rolls are in the same league and about 3 hours closer. The kids will love climbing on the rocks and will burn off a lot of energy. You will have to keep an eye on them especially if the waves are high.
This is becoming my m.o. but especially with kids, I still like the idea of taking the Casco Bay ferry for the 20 minute ride to Peaks Island. You can rent bikes on the island and there are a couple of decent places to eat and a good ice cream shoppe as well. Google Peaks Island for more info. Tons of god food in Portland as well - you can search this site for lots of suggestions.
Native San Diegan and went a couple of years ago to Maine and loved loved loved everything about Maine..
Had the lobster roll at Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth and was really good and you can't beat the oceanfront views..
It was close to Portland..
Make sure you have blueberry ice cream and pie too!
Allagash Brewery has excellent beer in Portland.
Have a great time and report back!
