Dinner for One Downtown?

  • 7

Hello,

I'm coming from DC to visit friends in Atlanta this weekend, but will be on my own on Friday and am looking for recommended places to treat myself to a nice dinner.

I prefer somewhere with nice atmosphere and modern american or modern southern cuisine (fresh ingredients, not too heavy). Moderate to slightly expensive is OK, but nothing on the very high end of formal. As it will be just me, something active with music or an open kitchen, etc. would be ideal, but anywhere I wouldn't be totally out of place as a party of one.

I'm staying downtown, which I realize isn't the best location for dining -- so I'm seeking something off of the MARTA, or a reasonable cab ride from downtown.

From my research so far Bocado and Two Urban Licks resonate -- but Bocado seems better for lunch and Two Urban Licks is all booked up. Any recommends for something similar or fitting the above would be much appreciated!

  1. I'd call to confirm, but I believe the bar seats around the open kitchen at Two Urban Licks are held for walk-ins. It's bar seating all around. I think it's fun to watch the chefs cook, and the atmosphere is fun and loud--great for a solo diner. It's a very short cab ride from downtown.

I would recommend Hugh Acheson's Empire State South, if you can get a table this late. They have online reservation system, so check it out.

    1. You may want to try Lunacy Black Market too, it's on Mitchell Street downtown. Incredible food at equally incredibly (low) prices.

I would not go there by yourself for dinner. I've been for lunch, but you really don't want to be walking around that part of town alone at night.

      2. i think Priccis fits the bill

        1. Thanks for the advice everyone. Just wanted to report back that I did go to Two Urban Licks.

I called the afternoon of and they were quite nice about reserving me a spot at the kitchen table.

Despite reading the descriptions, I was a little surprised at how massive and loud the place was. It felt a bit like a theme restaurant and I would have preferred something a bit more upscale and intimate.

That being said, the service was good and salmon chips are as good as everyone says, even if the rest of the food didn't quite impress. I also had fun chatting with my neighbors at the kitchen table, and the ambiance did improve as improve as the night (and wine) wore on.

Overall I left not impressed, but not regretting my choice either. Hope that is somewhat helpful for future visitors. Looking forward to coming back to Atlanta to try out more places!
