Vegetarian Buddhist restaurants ?

Hey I recently became a vegetarian and even more recently started following the buddhist vegetarian diet (no mushrooms, garlic, onions).
And although I love to eat out this has seriously limited the restaurants that I can go to.

Do you guys know of any buddhist vegetarian restaurants in Toronto ?
Or just any places that make good food sans garlic and onions ?

  1. I wasn't aware that Buddhist vegetarianism included no mushrooms. If that is the case, I think you will be hard pressed to find places. You might want to try Buddha's Vegetarian, Buddhist Vegetarian, Cafe 668, Gourmet Vegetarian but I'm sure they all serve mushrooms.

Raw restaurants would likely work for you too.

    Good luck.

I think raw restaurants are all too happy to use mushrooms, garlic, onions, and anything else that might make raw meals more punchy.

    2. No mushrooms? Really? I'm virtually positive that the 4 or 5 Buddhist Vegetarian restaurants I've been to (even in China and Vietnam) served loads of mushrooms, particularly one in Wutai Shan, a Buddhist pilgrimage area in northern China.

I think Bo De Duyen is Buddhist Veg, also possibly Buddah's. Up north, there is Lotus Pond, Graceful Vegetarian and Gourmet Vegetarian. It is also possible that cafe 668 is run by Buddhist Vegetarians, though you should call all and ask if you're concerned about what non-Buddhist items might be served. I'd also throw Rikishi into the mix. It is a Japanese restaurant that has a pretty extensive vegetarian menu (both sushi and cooked dishes), but they also serve meat, so if that is an issue, best to avoid it.

668 owners/chef are Buddhists but they will put non-Buddhist ingredients - garlic, onion - in their dishes if you ask.

      2. No mushrooms is a bit odd. I know the story behind no onions and garlic but this is the first time I've heard no mushrooms. I would love to learn more. Do you have an info link you can share?

          Doesn't Buddha's Delight contain mushrooms?

The buddhist vegetarian diet is based off of the Ayurvedic (Indian traditional medicine) diet. It states that there are three modes, goodness, passion and ignorance which all things fall under.
So food wise we are recommended to take a sattvic or goodness diet to promote happiness and spiritual growth. I think mushrooms have negative digestive effects/ promote drowsiness and are pretty much grown in poo :p

And although these are great for the body and immune system (garlic, onions etc) they aren't so great for the mind, and in my opinion, better overall in more important than selective nutritional supplements.

Makes much more sense now. It is a yoga diet not a Buddhist diet! :-)

I just figured most people wouldn't know what it was! Follows all the same principals except for mushrooms. I think most likely because there are just so many damn mushrooms in china, why waste them haha.

Ps thanks for all the restaurants.

          2. Buddhist Vegetarian Kitchen - on Midland. 1/2 of their dishes, if not more, contain mushrooms. Delicious, satisfying and CHEAP!
