Dinner Near Caltech

sallyawalk Jul 26, 2011 06:28 PM

Any recommendations for dinner near the Caltech campus? Will be dressed casually, but willing to try anything and open to something a bit pricey. Thanks!

We are back from our trip, so thought I would give an update. We ended up at Saladang, and really enjoyed our meal. The best thing was the Pun Klib (Thai dumplings with chicken & peanuts). Kind of sweet, sticky, and we could have eaten a dozen more. Thanks for all the advice!

Bistro 45 is good, a bit upscale for too casual (i.e., I wouldn't wear shorts/t-shirt).

How near CalTech? Any place in Pasadena or do you want to walk from CalTech? if you are driving, for Thai we like Saladang, Santorini for interesting dining, it is a really fun atmosphere. In the same complex as Santorini is AKA Bistro and Sushi Roku is close by. There is also Roy's on Colorado and they are consistently good.

If you are walking, look at Cham Korean Bistro on Lake in addition to Celestino and Pie 'n Burger.

We will have a car, and would be willing to drive a few miles. Although I see some promising suggestions already that appear to be pretty close. :) I will check these out and run them by my dining companion.

Lots of Thai food wildly popular with Caltech students: For example, President Thai is great

Lots of good Indian food, too. Tibet Nepal House has a lovely, peaceful atmosphere and is off the beaten Indian food path

You've gotten some good recommendations so far, to which I would add Cafe Verde.

I'm very fond of Malbec - an Argentinian restaurant with a lot more than just steak and an excellent wine list. It's not super casual but they have been welcoming to me when there were people in my group in jeans and t-shirts even. It's a nice atmosphere, close to Caltech and has some excellent food. Even the seafood oriented appetizers are great. http://www.malbeccuisine.com/default_...

For very casual, I'd pick Pie N Burger. Pricier but still relatively casual (you should be wearing business casual to fit in): Smitty's. Both are American food done right.
