Avoiding Waterfire on Saturday evening
We are meeting friends in Providence (half way between them in CT and us on the Cape) for a nice dinner on one of the next few Saturday evenings. We generally dine at New Rivers since I went to cooking school with Bruce. I know there are lot of good restaurants we haven't tried in Providence due to this connection. Where can we go in or around Providence to have a nice dinner while avoiding the madness that surrounds Waterfire? TIA

I would aim for the East Side, as it place you nowhere near Waterfire (or the roads that would lead you there). Perhaps Chez Pascal, La Laiterie, or Cook & Brown would fit the bill?
Broadway Bistro and Nick's are both excellent, but you would have to enter the Waterfire melee in order to get there. I used to live on Broadway - the particular exit off of 95 that you would need to take to get to either one is a disaster on those nights. Though, once there, you would probably (??) be fine.

re: LMWW
I'll third those East Side recs, as getting to the Broadway restaurants will likely be a traffic issue. The alternative, of course, since you mention "one of the next few Saturdays" is to schedule it for the 6th or the 20th, which are not Waterfire nights.
You could also choose to avoid Providence entirely, since your companions are coming from CT, and go to, say, La Masseria in East Greenwich. More convenient for them than for you, admittedly.
