SPQR v. Perbacco v. Frances

karendor Jul 25, 2011 06:59 PM

Step-daughter's 30th birthday. Table of 4 or 5. Want great food, fun, thoughtful service and good drink/wine list.

Nothing outrageously noisy on a Thursday night.

THANKS!

the food and service at SPQR are quite good, but the tables are close together and it will be pretty loud. we sit at the chef's counter, which is quieter than the main area because the line cooks/sous chefs have to hear each other, but four is probably the biggest party suitable for it in practicality (even less suited for a birthday gathering, but it's quite fun), because you'd sit in a line of course along the counter. Perbacco is probably a little more formal, quieter, spacious -- have had their food which is excellent, but not in the restaurant. all reviews about them are very positive.

I'd go with Perbacco. Great restaurant and fits all your criteria.

SPQR is great food, but does not have particlarly thoughtful/wonderful service (I do not fault the service, though. it's fine). But it may be noiser than you want.

Frances: food is hugely overrated, tables too close together, too noisy, not even remotely a gracious place. Only a fair wine list..

Great feedback. I have only been to Perbacco for drinks/apps and liked the vibe in the main restaurant. You both confirmed my thinking, and I so appreciate it. SPQR sounds good for a experience at another time for a smaller group.

        Thanks again, chowhounders are awesome...
