Hi there,
Coming into Rome with my wife for first time Sept 2,3 and 4th.
Staying at Visconti Palace, looking for any non touristy great food restaurants, dinners and possibly lunch, with any must not miss street food or gelato places.

Places that have raised some interest from reading thid board are:
Not far from my hotel.
Pizzarium - Is this a sit down restaurant or more of a takeout.
Planning this as a possibility when we get into our hotel around 8pm Friday Night.

Saturday going out a little further I like what I have read about La Gensola.
Any Specific Dishes not o be missed.

Flavio al Velavevodetto - Can anyone provide me with some feedback on this for Sunday night.

Should I leave Gensola for Sunday and possibly do Sforno Saturday.

Any suggestions or better options will be grately appriaciated.

Thank you,

  1. There is not really many places right near your hotel. But nothing in the center of Rome is that far either. So don't be put off by going a bit further. Rome just isn't that big.

Pizzarium is not really that close to your hotel. It's not a sit down place, more of a take out. If you're looking for a place to have a sit down dinner, then this probably isn't right.

La Gensola is one of my favorite places in Rome. I'd suggest ordering a few antipasti to split. Let the owner, Irene, suggest what is fresh and good that night. I love their Scallops with Squid Ink. It's all fish, but I guess you know that?

Flavio al Velavevodetto is a good choice for dinner on Sunday.

Sforno is great pizza, but you know it's very far out of the center? Quite a taxi ride. Just warning you. A closer option for pizza is Gatta Mangiona. Both are very good.

No, you should do Gensola on Saturday, not Sunday. It's never good to do a fish restaurant on a Sunday if you can help it.

If you troll the board, there are lots of recent recommendations for gelato. The best near you is Gracchi.
    Hope this helps! Elizabeth

    1. Here is a list of rome restaurants generated on the Restaurant database as close to your hotel address.

There are quite a number of good sitdown places on this list., ranging from very upscale (Il Convivio) down throught bourgeois maybe even a bit glossy(La Campana, L'Arcangelo, Ristorante Cesare) to homestyle casual like Trattoria Lilli. A first night in Rome, depending on the weather, might be a good night to walk along and across the tiber and into old Rome, but you might want to consider a reservation if its your first night and Saturday - or make a casual choice and be prepared to go early or wait a bit.

      La Campana
Vicolo della Campana, 18, Roma, IT 00186, IT

      Ristorante Cesare
Via Crescenzio 13, Roma 00193, IT

      Via G. G. Belli 59/61, Rome, Lazio 00193, IT

      Il Convivio Troiani
Via dei Soldati, 28, Rome, Lazio 00186, IT

      Trattoria Lilli

Thank you Elizabeth and Jen for your feedback. I will follow through certainly with the Saturday option with respect to La Gensola, that's a great tip Elizabeth I would have never known. Jen I will do some work through the list you provided as well. This is a great help and start for me.

      2. There is a restaurant directly across the street from the Visconti (name escapes me but it is hard to miss) - had a decent lunch there recently on the recommendation of an Italian colleague. Not many tourists, other customers were soberly dressed Italian professional/business types.

        Not sure about weekend hours.

Maybe this - Ristorante L'Antico Porto, found on Googlemaps
http://www.ristorantelanticoporto.it/ - seems to be a fish specialist - a local site indicates its closed on Sunday
