Kavkaz Kebab: Azerbaijani in Owings Mills
It's not often I go to Owings Mills. And, I've never gone out of my way to eat there, but I did find myself there this afternoon and ended up at Kavkaz Kebab.
Nestled in strip mall chain restaurant hell is an unassuming, pretty little restaurant decorated with photos of Old Baku. The menu is fairly compelling. While much looked good, we settled on the grilled eggplant salad, fresh and earthy, complete with cilantro on top. Tandori bread was light and somewhat flaky, pretty actually, and came with some addictive tomato paste-y sauce. (We did ask our server what the sauce was called, and the answer was "homemade sauce.") I'm a big believer in light soup in hot weather, so we went with dushpara soup, a lightly flavored broth with little lamb filled dumplings. While very good on its own, the soup came alive when adding the vinegar with chopped garlic that comes with it. Finally, we had lulya kabab, described as the house specialty, which is ground lamb and ground beef. It was smokey and succulent.
The service was friendly and competent. (It probably didn't hurt that we were the only diners there.) The place is BYOB, and halal.
This was one of those meals that one keeps bringing up in that, wow, was that good way. While OW was always distinctly off my radar, with Kavkaz Kebab, I'm now looking for reasons to make that trip up 795.
