ISO Asian in Highland Park, Glassell Park, Eagle Rock

Have lived in the area for almost two years and have found the Asian options lacking. Lemongrass is good, yes. Blue Hen is good, but the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired IMHO. Any suggestions for a pleasant Chinese/Thai/whatever meal with friends would be appreciated.

  1. A 'nice' Asian place in those neighborhoods may not actually exist. When I lived there about 10 yrs ago, I just drove a bit since Pasadena/SGV was so close - Oak Tree Inn on Fair Oaks in So. Pas. has decent, standard-issue Chinese restaurant food in a pleasant atmosphere, then up the street in Pasadena there's Saladang, Yujean Kang, and even little Suriya Thai across from Huntington Hospital isn't bad. Of course, Chinatown is just down the road too.

Back in your neck of the woods though you have some great Filipino places (Nanay Gloria) and just saw (but didn't try - yet) some serious fried goodness at "Toto's Lechon Manok" right where York Ave. goes under the 2 Freeway. But these are seriously no-frills, and not where I'd take friends for dinner.

Probably not that helpful - may be an impossible quest for places that are actually *in* NE L.A.?

    1. Zilch for Chinese ever since Charlie Chan's Seafood closed down 20 years ago. Too close to SGV or Chinatown for anybody to want to open something decent there. Same reason there's nothing in Glendale.

      1. There is also Good Girl Dinette which has varying opinions in Highland Park that does I suppose modern Vietnamese.

        1. Good Girl Dinette's pretty okay, great home made sodas, but we also like Lemon Grass in Eagle Rock for Vietnamese. Blue Hen has always been a little meh for me (FWIW, GGD is from the original owner of Blue Hen).

Panang SHOULD be terrible, but it's not. More than surprisingly decent Thai-Chinese-Sushi fusion. You can certainly do worse. Sicha Siam can also be pretty good, but they've become a little bit hit or miss lately. Some folks really like Thai Eagle Rox, and I remember the space was pretty nice, but it didn't do it for us. OK Chinese on Colorado (w/ a sister branch in the Figueroa Produce center), can also be pretty decent for limited take out - not a lot of options, but some of it is not bad. But yes, it's hard to compete for Chinese when Chinatown is 7 minutes away.

As for "when I lived there 10 years ago", it sounds kinda silly. The same can be said about other areas - Culver City, Downtown. etc. Things change...
