Where's someplace great for dessert that's not a usual suspect?
I'm looking for someplace new to try. It can be a restaurant, truck or bakery...or whatever for that matter. I'm familiar w/ the usual places (i.e., Huckleberry, Providence, Hatfield's, et al) & I love them all, but I'm wondering what else may be out there? It can be anywhere from Venice to Silverlake, I'm not afraid of a little time in the car. Just looking for something new...
Your "usual places (i.e., Huckleberry, Providence, Hatfields, et al)" leaves a LOT of uncovered territory as far as where you have and haven't tried dessert. For instance, have you tried any of the myriad of desserts at Simon/L.A. (including the "junk food" ones)? http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.carolineoncrack.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/HolidayJunkFoodWide.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.carolineoncrack.com/2007/12/17/sugar-high-for-the-holidays-simon-las-holiday-dessert-platter/&usg=__Ch0U6EEu5RYBa47dM_pXPsbZeWI=&h=611&w=499&sz=58&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=lAQTxRy3_FpmLM:&tbnh=135&tbnw=110&ei=eKkoTseiEI36sAOG8eiCCQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dsimon%2Bla%2Bjunk%2Bfood%2Bdessert%2Bplatter%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1920%26bih%3D949%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=182&vpy=73&dur=548&hovh=135&hovw=110&tx=95&ty=137&page=1&ndsp=69&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0

I would also recommend the desserts at the Nickel Diner downtown (maple bacon doughnuts along with all the other things they have): http://nickeldiner.com/photos.htm

I really enjoy Craft's desserts. Chef Shannon is the bomb. You can enjoy that in the lounge, or outdoors.
No comment on the SimonLA link (which is comment enough).

Another thought would be the Indonesian desserts at Ramayani on Westwood Blvd. including their "Ice Shanghai" which consists of mixed fruits, cendol (a worm like jelly made from rice flour with green food coloring added) grass jelly and all topped with vanilla syrup and condensed milk. They also do a "frozen durian" dessert which I've never tried.

Babalu, on Montana in Santa Monica, has an amazingly varied dessert case—cakes, pies, cookies, you name it. I usually lurch in and get something to go on the way home from the Farmers Market. http://www.babalu.info/

Has anyone had the desserts at Tavern in Brentwood (aside from their Snickers bar thingie?) I am thinking of going there for dessert tomorrow with friends but only if the other desserts are good, as I don't care for peanuts/peanut butter desserts.
I posted more details about our dessert needs for tomorrow night in the follow thread -- if anyone has suggestions I'd love to hear 'em! http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/8145...
