Good Chinese in Alexandria?

Can anyone suggest a good Chinese or Chinese American place in Alexandria or the Shirlington area. There was a previous post asking this question about DC but no respondents mentioned any place in Alexandria. I know that Peking Gourmet is near but the food there does nothing for me. TIA

  1. Sampan Cafe is in Alexandria (just east of the Springfield Mall) is pretty good. Full Key in Falls Church is closer to Shirlington and I think much better than PG. Both are Chinese (primarily Cantonese style). They have the normal Chinese American fare for lunch, but both attract a large Asian clientele.

    1. Not in Shirlington or Alexandria, but somewhat close:
Canton Cafe in Springfield (Springfield Plaza) is 10 minutes away from Shirlington down 395 South/95 South. Good for Cantonese. It possible that it has gone downhill slightly over the past year or so, or maybe I've just been a bit unlucky, but it's still good enough to recommend. I like the squid with spicy salt, black pepper scallops (can't remember the name but its the one that comes on a hot plate sort of like fajitas), and chinese broccoli or watercress with garlic to name a few. It's been a couple of years since I had the whole fish but when I did it was very good.

      1. We really like Golden Dragon in Bradlee Plaza on King Street. We used kung pao as our control dish, testing it at each restaurant. This is the best we found in the area. I really like the yu-shaing eggplant. Dumplings are good and the portions are enough for several days.

Small place, so I usually get take out or delivery (we live in Parkfairfax so I assume they deliver to Shirlington). The also have sushi. Find their menu on menupages.com

I think we might need to get some eggplant tonight!

Thanks for the recommendation. That location is perfect.

Golden Dragon has its very good selections and its not-so-good selections.

Like you I really like the yu-shang eggplant. "Beef with Finger Hot Peppers" is one of my favorites. "Beef with Green and White Onions" (or is it lamb? - my memory is weak) is straight-ahead and quite nice. The sushi is quite popular but I can't afford it.

Thanks Wayne for the recommendation. I sometimes get in a rut ordering only what I really like. I think Friday night Chinese sounds perfect and I will try the beef or lamb with onions.

        2. If you're willing to go outside the beltway, head down Rt 1 a couple of miles to "Peking Duck" (7531 Richmond Highway). Great dumplings, fantastic duck and a lot of other great dishes. I haven't found better dumplings or Peking Duck anywhere!

If you like eggplant, try their Velvet Chicken. Another favorite is Shirmp with Vegetables.

We love damn near every dish at this place. Try it!

I'll have to give Peking Duck another try. The last meal I had there was just so-so; their wings were done in a cornmeal batter (big turnoff for me) and everything else was just too syrupy. The duck was still solid though. I prefer House of Dynasty, but that's a pain to get to sometimes.
