ISO - Classic Ice Cream Shop in the Valley

As it gets hot and hotter out here, I'd love to go and have some ice cream.
It seems like there are all sorts of self-serve yogurt places, and walk up to a counter gelato spots -- which are great. But I have a hankering for an old-school ice-cream experience.
I'm looking for a place where I can sit down and relax with a banana split, or some sort of frothy milkshake, perhaps a malt.
If Pasadena doesn't seem like it's on the far side of the moon then this is the place for your quest.
Fair Oaks Pharmacy & Soda Fountain
1526 Mission St South, Pasadena, CA 91030
De Soto Pharmacy on Roscoe Blvd in Canoga Park was featured on Eater LA having an old fashion soda shop called Jerry's. I've been meaning to try it. Also the Santa Monica Pier has a great ice cream sundae shop in Soda Jerks. It's located in the Carousel building. Also Milk in Hollywood puts a modern spin on the old fashion soda shop. Sundae's, shakes, what have you.
Jerry's is very good, and when I've gone the place has been much less harried than Fair Oaks Pharmacy can get. They serve ice cream from Cascade, Lappert's, and Fosselman's in a simple, old-fashioned setting that will remind people of a certain age of a certain Age. Get an outstanding ice-cream soda, and ask the friendly fountain jerk to dip the glass in chocolate sauce, which freezes into a layer of profound bliss on the outside. If you take along your grandparents, you'll earn both a star in Heaven and, most likely, better Christmas presents.
