Romantic 30th birthday on a weekday (and a budget)
My bf's 30th birthday falls on Wednesday of next week and I would like to take him somewhere nice but not too fancy, since i am recently unemployed. Although he would appreciate a romantic setting with delicious food, I know that he wouldn't want me to overspend.
I was wondering if there are any restaurants on the westside (Venice, Santa Monica, MDR) that might have weekday specials (maybe a Wednesday special) or other budget friendly but romantic options. I am thinking of spending less than $100 total including drinks.
There is a little Italian place over on Westwood Blvd. (a little outside your geographic preference but not in the next County) called Sprazzo that seems romantic to me. You can call and reserve one of the big booths along the N wall (even for just 2 people - you can just see the back of the booths in this photo off of Yelp http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/nBBOng... ) and the prices are fair and the food is good...You will easily get out under budget as long as you don't get two bottles of wine. ;-D>

How about Restaurant 2117 on Sawtelle? Low-key but appealing ambiance; delicious, interesting menu. The a la carte menu is reasonable. You could combine sharing some small plates & maybe one larger entree. Or, perhaps the more extensive prix fixe @ $38 would work if you save $ by bringing your own wine. Corkage is only $10.

Gonna to shill FIG until my tongue bleeds (tho I'm absolutely unaffil'd, in case the mods want to liberally "moderate"). It's perfect for this.
50% off EVERYTHING, including drinks from 5-6pm (almost daily). And I really don't think any restaurant in LA can beat FIG's execution vs. price ratio during the HH pricing scheme.
Nook Bistro, tucked into the corner of the minimall on the S/E corner of Santa Monica Blvd. at Barry, has very good food with most entrees $20 or under. Very good professional service, nice atmosphere, though many of the two-tops are close to eachother you can ask for a quiet corner. Free parking so that saves a few dollars...

Josie in Santa Monica does a Wednesday night farmers market special. I think it's $35....which doesn't leave a lot of money for drinks. Check out Upstairs 2....at the Wine House. I'm not sure I'd call it romantic....but they have really fun pairings with food. It's very good and very reasonable, and they do some sort of special on Wednesday nights.
And check out the bar menu at Valentino. I think the prices are really reasonable, and I've heard really good things. That's a lovely restaurant.
