Waterfront Dining

So I'm a huge mega fan of the movie "when harry met sally" and one of my favorite scenes is when Sally tells her girlfriends that she broke up with Joe. They were sitting outside on this fabulous waterfront cafe and I always said if I ever make it to NY I want to eat there! Well, I realize it's about 20 years later, but if anyone knows what restaurant that was filmed at or if it's even still there that would be awesome! If not then what would you recommend for a spectacular waterfront dining experience?

How about a great sweeping vista of Queens from Riverpark.

      Don't you mean Brooklyn?

I guess all the boroughs look the same? ;)

Ouch! (especially since I'm a native Brooklynite). I think one can see both Brooklyn and Queens from the terrace at Riverpark. Great view of the FDR too!

We haven't been back to Riverpark since our first dinner last fall. A few weeks ago, we thought we'd go again, this time for lunch, and sit on the terrace. But when we called, we were that they don't accept reservations for tables on the terrace. Ergo, it's first come-first served. Despite the fact that Riverpark is walking distance from our apartment, we're not inclined to go there intending to sit outdoors only to discover that all those tables are occupied. So, it looks as though outdoor dining at Riverpark is not happening for us.

You get a good view of Long Island City and the old Pepsi sign...I'm afraid Brooklyn doesn't fare as well, mostly being blocked by a large building on the other side of the FDR-but you can see a few of the Greenpoint churches.
I'm looking forward to going back this week for their amazing RW menu (basically the whole menu).

My husband and I had a great RW dinner at Riverpark last Friday. Probably the best RW meal ever. It was Friday at 7:30 p.m. and we only had to wait 10 minutes or so for a two-top on the terrace. The terrace is quite lovely - yes, you are awfully close to FDR but you are definitely above it so the noise isn't too bad. Nice view of East River and Queens. Really convenient if you are driving - we were glad that we took our motorbike there.

Central Park Boathouse is one of those places where visitors really love - and their food is actually pretty good, if never amazing. I like to take visitors there after a boat ride in the summer.

I love Riverpark, and our RW dinner there last week was lovely. We sat inside by the windows, and frankly, that is preferable to being outside on a hot summer night. The view is the same. Whether RW or not, the value for money is excellent and the food is great.

Another terrific meal at Riverpark-they really do a great RW job-everything we had was delicious:

Cavetelli with lamb, peas and mint
                    Ravioli with mascarpone and tomatoes

Flatiron steak with guajillo chiles and beans
                    Pork chop with fava beans

Lemon pudding with lemon verbena ice cream
Creme fraiche panna cotta with strawberries

It was worth the hot walk from the subway-but if you drive-where else in NY do you get free parking?
There were some people outside-I think they are crazy, but at least it's in the shade!

Last weekend the weather was perfect for outdoor dining - around 75 degrees with cool breeze at sunset. Riverpark's patio was packed! I can't imagine it tonight though, with record-breaking heat and all.

"Spectacular waterfront dining" = the River Café, just across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan.

The scene was shot at The Central Park Boathouse.
