Chinese take-out in South Minneapolis

Hello everyone!

I have been looking for a good Chinese take-out place in South Minneapolis (preferably around Nokomis if possible) since I moved here, but I am having a heck of a time finding one that fits the bill. I'm looking for entrees priced between $6-$7.

Almost everywhere we have tried, it's been what I would consider to be expensive for Chinese take-out, and the food hasn't been good either. (my favorite is steamed dumplings, but at this point just looking for a reasonably-priced place)

Thanks for any suggestions!!!!

  1. Where have you tried so far?

    1. Try Ming's Palace. They also deliver and it is fast and good!!

      1. Have you tried Singapore, on the corner of 34th Ave and 55th St.? It's not strictly Chinese, but comes close. They are a bit more expensive than you're wanting, but they have some noodle dishes in the $9 range. Good food.

I live a couple blocks from Nokomis. Chinese takeout offerings in the area are slim.

        1. I second Singapore and would also add Crystal Garden, which is in the strip mall near 46th and Hiawatha. I love their chow fun!

          1. Thanks so much everyone for your suggestions, this really helps me out! I'll have to try Singapore and Ming's Palace.

I have tried Crystal Garden, most of their entrees look like they are about $10, which isn't a lot, but I always want to pay less for take-out, that's what I would pay for sitting in a restaurant. But I know there's not too many budget prices anymore, they are hard to find. l used to live in another state and we had a Chinese take-out place right behind where we lived that had a whole menu for under $7 but as I mentioned, pretty rare to find a gem like that.

Speaking of Chinese food, I dined at Pagoda a couple of weeks ago (by U-M) and had their kung pao chicken and the sauce was excellent, probably the best kung pao chicken I've had yet. The only thing was that they sprinkled raw peanuts over it (it's usually supposed to be cooked peanuts) but other that I absolutely loved it and would recommend it to anyone! They had a very extensive menu and it was hard to decide what to get, but it was a great choice. I'll post a review but definitely try Pagoda if you've never been!

If you liked Pagoda by the U, try Village Wok and Hong Kong Noodle.

At Village Wok avoid the appetizers and deep fried foods. I like their Singapore Rice Noodles and Chicken Wor Mein (gigantic noodle soup). It's easy to feed 2-3 people on either of these dishes. Another dish I've enjoyed is the Iron Hot Beef. They also have hot pots and late night menu with congee.

            2. We used to live around Portland and the parkway. There were three chinese take-out places that we would frequent:

              - 46th & Nicollet in the strip mall. It's located near the Caribou and was Mrs. Gutgrease's favorite joint
              - 48th & Chicago next to the shoe repair shop, across from Levain (my favorite because it was within walking distance)
              - 54th & Chicago across from the child-care place and kitty-corner from the dentist. That was my favorite place as the food seemed fresh

This topic has been covered previously so you might want to find the thread, which is probably a year or two old already.

The place at 46th and Nicollet is Fresh Wok and I agree, they're awesome (though I have to do pick-up--they don't deliver to my 'hood.) The chicken in garlic sauce is fresh and delicious.

I'm on 28th Ave., right between Nokomis and Hiawatha, and your post prompted me to check out Fresh Wok. Turns out, they deliver here, and it is awesome.

Many thanks for the heads up. I thought that I would be forever doomed to the wretched Bill's Garden for my guilty pleasure Chinese needs.

              2. Anyone else go to Cathay Chow Mein on 54th/Nicoltte? My in-laws swear by it (they only get chow mein from here). Personally I haven't had enough to give it a detailed review, wontons were really good last time. :) It's easy to get to and close to the highway if we are coming from downtown to the burbs on 35W. Nothing has blown me away, but it's good basic chinese takeout. Either way, might be another option in the area...

Oh my gosh I am SO glad I found this post. I had a terrible skyway Chinese lunch buffet experience last week and got a craving to right the horrendous wrong of crap Chinese. I was searching for a suggestion and this reminded me how close to Cathay I was. The place looks old and a little sketch from the outside, but you can put your Chinese-craving guts at ease, this will delight. They don't deliver, but everything is made fresh and was piping hot. I got eggrolls--fab--Mongolian beef (asked them to kick it up with extra spice and they did), and pork chow mein. The broccoli is still green, the carrots are still crisp and there is tons of flavor. They've been in business 65 years, but are definitely worth re-experiencing.

                2. chocolatemint- I have lived in Nokomis for a few years and have your exact same predicament. Funny. Sometimes frustrating. But.. it is what it is. I will share some of my learnings.

Our go-to place for take-out delivery is China Wok near the Rainbow/Cub on Lake St. Not quite in the neighborhood, but they will deliver, and they have good Chinese food at the lower price point you talk about. They have a large delivery area, as far sounth as Hwy 62, so you are likely in their range. http://www.chinawokmn.com/

Other places we've tried that are acceptable:
Singapore- great fried noodles and curries, but a little more $, and since it is really the owner running everything you can wait awhile for your food. The food is awesome, but if you need it ready in 10 minutes, this does not work.

Vina Restaurant across the river in Highland Park. Great food, fair prices, no delivery (and Vietnamese centered, but they still have Chinese standbys) http://www.vina168.com/vinamenu.html

                  Places we don't return to:
Hop Wong- in the strip mall with Rainbow on Lake and they do deliver- gross

                  Ming's Palace- buffet was cold

Hope this helps, and report back if you find something good.

I live on Lake Nokomis myself and we're devotees of Fresh Wok. Try the Seafood Delight, it's a repeat winner in my household.

                  2. Thanks everyone, this is a very extensive listing, I don't think I will have any more trouble finding a good Chinese take-out place anymore, it's always my go-to dish when I'm just too tired to cook but want something a bit healthier than McDonald's (although McDonald's does have a nice selection of breakfast items as well as iced drinks believe it or not)

Keith in Minneapolis- the "wretched Bill's Garden" was one of the main reasons that prompted me to post my question in the first place- we tried that place when we first moved here, and I'm so happy I never need to return there again, it was awful.

I'll post back if there's anything significant to report. In the meantime, thanks again for a great list everyone!!!!

                    1. This is a little further south, but it's now my new part of town so I'll list it out. The Eddie Cheng restaurant is really good. They probably don't deliver much north of Hwy62 but it is good stuff. It's located next to the Richfield Liquor Store and Einstein's Bagel in the strip mall on the north side of 494 and Lyndale.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Kwans on 54th and Penn. Very affordable family run joint. Avoids the China Wok syndrome with a smaller, less grease laden menu and some very good and cheap daily specials such as chicken and green beans. I think they really deserve a shot, they are not your typical neighborhood chinese greasy take out joint.

Try Seafood to Go on Lake and Chicago. Very humble setting, but they have nicely fried fish and excellent chicken wings. Also, it' a very good deal.

I didn't think Seafood to Go was still open? I used to like their fried shrimp with hot sauce...
