Looking for a good independent steakhouse a step or two above smokeys. Checked out capital and tornado room but looking for a locals opinion.

Sorry that no one has chimed in.
Tornado Room...hands down. Along with great steaks you also get the real Wisconsin supper club treatment...great stuff.
When we host our company's compatriots from Great Britain, this is where we take them. They love it.
Please seriously consider their "Signature Bone in Tenderloin"....very nice.
Good luck and good chow,

Thank you! Tornado Room is exactly where we ended up. The bone in tenderloin was great and so were the hash browns. It was exactly what I was looking for. With my daughter starting UW in the fall I am trying to figure out the Madison chowhound food scene.

Actually have never been to L'Etoile, but please enjoy.
If you're at Lombo's early, I'll be the fat guy with the cute wife sitting at the bar table at the end of the partition.
They have JUST changed the menu, yesterday.
Their pizzas are always good.
I'll stop by on my way home tonight and check out the new menu and see if there are any absolute grand slams on it.
Honestly, I've never had a bad meal here...I've ordered poorly, but never had a bad meal.
If any of their nightly specials appeal, go that way.
Enjoy!

Amplification: They change their menu 4 to 5 times a year, according to what's in season....NOT just overhauling the menu.

You are now two for two. We loved Lombardino's. Excellent pasta and service. Would have liked to thank you in person but we arrived after 8.
I will report back on L'Etoile and Sardine for brunch tomorrow. Still trying to get used to how nice everyone is in Madison!

WON-derful!
Happy to have been of help. Sardine is a really nice space with good food and nice service.
Haven't been to L'Etoile, but am eager to hear your impressions.
As long as you have to spend the tuitiion, here, it's great that you're treating yourself at the same time. (Ours just graduated from Madison in June.)
Stop by Fromagination on your next trip, if you like good cheese. Our (relatively) local Carr Valley 15 year cheddar is wonderful.
