Early September I'll be hosting dear friends for a golf weekend.

Staying in Clearwater and playing at Innesbrook resort and up to Brooksville for a day.

Need recs for Italian, BBQ, fresh fish and best burgers.

Not high end please but looking for a good dining experience , fun atmosphere and a good wine/ beer selection.

I live in Orlando - they are from NYC- need I say more.

  1. I noticed your post languishing for a few days. Sadly, this part of the board can be quiet at times.
I lived here for over 35 years and still visit frequently, so I'll dive in. Hopefully some current residents can fine tune the recommendations!

First off, depending on where you are staying in Clearwater there will be a bit of driving. Are you looking for food near the golfing or food near the hotel? Or are you just looking for specific dining options and don't mind driving?

I can't really comment on the quality of wine lists, so I'm just leaving that out of the equation.
I also have no ideas for Brooksville area. My go-to places for burgers are long gone, so perhaps others will have suggestions.

ITALIAN, first three are an easy drive from Innisbrook:
    Casual:
    Pinocchios
    http://www.pinocchiospizzarestaurant....

I haven't tried them, but someone on CH gave them a good mention and I've had them on my list to try:
    Corteos
    http://corteos.com/

    Nicer:
    Massimo

This last one is in between Tampa and Clearwater, very good and more of a splurge:
    Armanis

    SEAFOOD
There are several casual places in Ozona ( N. of Dunedin, W. of Innisbrook) which would be an easy drive after golfing. These days I prefer Ozona Blue. They also have patio dining, a view of the intercoastal and marina and a swimming pool – which you can use. There are several others in this area, but my experience with them is not within the last year.

    Ozona Blue

    Molly Goodheads

If you are looking for seafood closer to Clearwater (I prefer these over the Ozona options):

High end, sister restaurant of Armanis : Oystercatchers. They have the most amazing brunch!

More reaonably priced, very nicely prepared seafood is Guppy's on Indian Rock Beach:

(I think Guppy's is a world above their sister restaurant Mystic Fish. I have yet to have a truly good meal at Mystic Fish

    )

Casual, great for beer and a grouper sandwich is Frenchy's. There are several locations, each with a different menu. I like the original best. Many prefer Rockaway on the beach for the view.

If you are willing to drive, then Ted Peters on Passadena is fantastic for local color, tradition and kick-ass smoked fish. I stick with the mullet, been eating it there since I was under a year old, but it is strongly flavored for some. Many love their burger.

    BBQ

This area doesn't have much. At this point the one I like best is Pitt Boss, a bit North and East, perhaps 20 min. from Innisbrook

I've only had their babyback ribs, fries and baked beans.

This ought to get you started!

Thank you so much for these suggestions.

I will check them out but would appreciate more comments from Chowhounders.

Definitly need a good - I mean very good Italian and steak joint.

      Preferably , family owned.

    2. Hmm, I missed this post.

So you're looking for a good Italian restaurant in the Bay area...

I haven't been there in a few years, but Alfono's is an older family owned Italian restaurant that had a pretty solid wine selection, and the food was good...

If you're willing to drive into St. Pete, you could hit Mazzaro's Market, down on 22nd St. They're an Italian market/deli with a great selection of wine, beer, meats, cheese, and have a cafe you can enjoy your dinner at, although it's a pretty casual affair, and you'll need to get there early (they close at 6pm).

A lot of the Yankee transplants from NY who go there, all tend to swear that Mazzaro's is probably one of the best Italian places in the Bay area.

I don't know what price range you're looking at; but, if you're looking for a good place for steak and the best wine selection south of Washington DC, and if you don't mind the drive to south Tampa, there's always Bern's Steakhouse.

I think Molly Goodheads has the best grouper sandwich around, and a good beer selection as well.

I like Guppy's and Mystic Fish.

Spoto's used to get some pretty high marks for steaks as I recall, but i have never been. Salt Rock Grill gets pretty high marks as well, but again, I have not been. Salt Rock also has a pretty impressive wine list

For italian I always liked Casa Ludovico in Palm Harbor
