Anniversary Dinner--Grotto is Booked--Suggestions needed!
My husband and I are staying in downtown Boston (Faneuil Hall area) for our 5-year anniversary this weekend. We had done some research and decided on Grotto for our anniversary dinner, but the whole restaurant has been reserved on that day! Back to square one...
We are looking for a cozy, romantic restaurant within walking distance (we're willing to walk a little, but no Cambridge/Somerville). Cost isn't a concern, but we've never been *that* impressed with any entrees where we've paid $35-40 per entree. We don't want anything too snooty/high-class, and my husband doesn't do seafood. Doesn't have to be Italian, but we're not really big roast chicken/steak type people (checked out Hamersly's as an option). We're not opposed to the North End, but have never been overly impressed with anything there (although it's been a while).
Grotto seemed to fit the bill perfectly and now we're looking for any suggestions that you have! Thanks in advance--these boards helped us decide on Grotto in the first place!

I also am a fan of Grotto. It's the easy walking caveat that is the challenge here. for excellence of food, i would choose Erbaluce (take a short cab ride to the South End) and after that, lala rokh or bin 26 in Charles St. area.hope you have a lovely evening.

If Grotto filled the bill Trattoria Toscana on Jersey Street in the Fenway section of Boston would be the only substitute I would consider. They don't normally take reservation but this is a husband and wife team who love to make people happy.
Here is my romantic evening for you. Start early and walk to the rose garden in the Fenway where you can have some private time to remember why you are still together and make whatever promises you wish to one another. (check the hours it is open)
They slip around the corner for an early dinner at Trattoria Toscana. I would call ahead and tell them it is your anniversary dinner they might save the corner table by the window for you. An early dinner will give you time to do other things later in the evening. Consider the Top of the Hub for an after dinner drink with a view. I'll leave the rest of the planning to you.

Lala Rokh is lovely (look at their menu, Persian in influence) - Erbaluce has wonderful food. Sel de la Terre is near you and so is Menton if you want to do a "big" dinner. Good luck.
