Baby Friendly but Trendy?

  • 6

My best friend is in from Switzerland and wants to go to a good trendy restaurant, or an "ALL CAPS" from the Zagat's. I have a three month old, and since we will be trampsing around the city all day with the baby, it would suck to have to go all the way back to Brooklyn to drop off the kid and then come back into the city. So...

Anyone have recs for a good restaurant that is baby friendly and also "trendy"? It would be for Monday night and the baby would just sit in our laps (no stroller or highchair). she is really mellow and wont be fussy or crying at all (I'll feed her right before we go so she'll be milk drunk).

I already made a resey at Standard Grill for 6;30. Is that baby friendly at all?

  1. Standard Grill? Are you kidding? Might as well just take the baby to a bar. If it HAS to be in Manhattan, how about something like Otto? Otherwise, pick something trendy in Brooklyn (according to Time Out there are plenty), and drop the baby back off at home on the way. But I would not take a child into Standard Grill.

    1. Early at the Bar Room at the Modern works. Not sure if that still qualfies as trendy, or ever did.

      1. I would not take an infant or small child to the Bar Room at the Modern...I have to agree with the advice about getting a babysitter if you want to go to such a restaurant.

When we had lunch in the Bar Room at The Modern on July 4th, I noticed a couple with a young child, a baby + stroller at one of the tables. It was a holiday, so it didn't seem out of place. The little girl was very well-behaved and not a peep out of the baby. We've also been there for lunch on Sunday, and I think bringing a baby and young, well-behaved children then would be o.k. At all other times, I agree that it would not be appropriate.

        2. Do NOT take the baby to the Standard. It is loud, crowded and a club like atmosphere. A 3 month old!? Yikes.

Gosh, the only option I could suggest: outside table at Morandi (WV is very kid friendly and Morandi is now a neighborhood staple but still semi-glam crowd).

Would Vandaag be appropriate? I've never dined there.

I've actually seen a baby at The Dutch - this was in the early evening, before the restaurant got too crowded. The staff seemed very accommodating.

Vandaag is a good idea. I've seen babies there during brunch. I haven't been there for dinner.
