Original Joe's: When to open in North Beach?

Does anyone know when they will reopen in the DiMaggio space at Union/Stockton?

I have to believe the prices will be much higher in that high rent area.

  1. Tentatively October 12, the anniversary of the fire.

    Fior d'Italia was at 601 Union for 50 years.

        The Fior d'Italia fire was on February 15, 2005. They reopened in the old San Remo space that November. Qutie a contrast with Original Joe's, which has been closed since 2007.

          So, is Joe's going into the old Fior d'Italia place?

    2. North Beach rents are a bargain - not much higher than the Tenderloin these days.

      I don't think anyone doubts they're going to do really well once they reopen in the Fall. Food prices have gone up all around since 2007 though, haven't they?

        I heard, from a reliable source, that, before the fire, of course, they'd stopped slicing the steaks -- I guess they used to break down the sides of beef. A lot of changes once the original owner died .. he was into his 90's and still going to the restaurant (daily?) to supervise.

          Sadly, you would be hard pressed to still find even a butcher that still breaks down their own beef. Most receive it suction packed from the distributor.

          That's amazing if they were really hand slicing steaks. Hopefully they're aware of how well received that kind of attention is amongst today's food audience.

            They were still breaking down lambs and sides of beef in the basement in 2003:

Hi....If you go to the web site ( there is a clock ticking down to the opening, right now it says 28 days...But I have been watching it for months and it keep changing , extening the opening date, I assume due to remodel delays. Lets hope it is soon...cannot wait for that great food aging. Hope this help Bev
