Mondays and Tuesdays in Bergamo

waxyjax Jul 15, 2011 10:36 AM

hi guys,
i'm considering spending a few days in Bergamo before making my way to Rome. the thing is it'd probably be from Monday - Wednesday in early September. I did some research here and read that many restaurants are shut on those days. Am I totally out of luck then? Are there villages outside of the city where I could take a culinary drive to...like near lake iseo? Or should I just opt to take the train directly from Bergamo to another city?

thanks!!!

It certainly felt like that to me on our two visits, but in fact, even tho these are prime closing days in Bergamo, there are plenty of places open on one or the other of the two days, and food shops on the main drag of the CItta Alta are open. Ive reported in past posts on two restaurants that are open, one upscale, Colleoni dell'Angelo, which has exquisite seafood and other dishes, and the other just last week, Cooperative Citta Alta, cheap and good, There is also now an eating place opened up, I think on Via de Tassis, by an Enoteca with excellent wines and cheeses we enjoyed visiting on our last trip - I believe that they would also do well and will try to find their card to provide further info.

There is a fair selection of places on the Restaurant page (click on one of the restaurants to the right and then on the link below the map to show nearby restaurants and it will give you the full Bergamo list.

Of these Bar Donizetti, Da Mimmo, and L'Osteria di Via Solata are open Monday and Taverna Valtellinese are open Tuesday, in addition to the above. If you want to spring for the big bucks and have transport, Da Vittorio, the michelin*** is in nearby Brusaporto

Bergamo's Citta Alta is lovely, and I would not skip it.

I'll be in Bergamo mid-August (Saturday evening to Monday mid-day). I've heard that Milan / Bergamo shut down in August. Do you happen to know if the places on your list will be open in August?

        Thanks

Thank again Jen for all your research into these opening time. It looks like plans have shifted...I'll be arriving just in time for lunch (if transport is quick) on Sunday now and am leaving the next day to check out Lake Como. Hoping I'll have time to have a Sunday lunch, dinner, and Monday lunch in Bergamo.

I read raves about Colombina...should I try that for dinner Sunday or one of the above places you replied about?

Man, I'm so exicted - wish I had more time to spend in Bergamo!

Bergamo is a cool town but I think the day you have would probably be enough to enought to see the main things. There are a lot of good restaurants in Bergamo and Ive only been to two but La Columbina would have been my top pick based on reports on this site. I think too it looks out over the valley from its location on borgo canale. You should also consider going up the Funicular to San Vigilio with stunning views and the walk down is nice. There is a fancy Michelin rated restaurant up there, Baretto di San Vigilio but I know no more about it. (I will try to find and link in the 2008 review Im thinking of of La Columbina.

aw, thanks for reassurance on my length of stay!

i checked the menu for Baretto di San Viglio - looks great! we'll have to feel out if we want a high-brow or low-brow lunch...although it looks like some of our decision will be decided by whatever places are open Monday, too.

this is an old article, but has handy recommendations on local eatiers (all of which you already posted about!)

dont know. All the closing info I have is on the Restaurant page entries. If you have a place to stay reserved why not check with them and see whether yu will have probalems with restaurants at that time?

ps - looked for some additional info on the viaMichelin page (usually a good source) which indicates that L'Osteria Via Solata is closed from 5-25 August. http://www.viamichelin.it/web/Ristora...
and that La Columbina is Closed for 15 days in July (which would suggest they are open in August) There are also some additional restaurants mentioned on that site that may be of interest and have not been referenced on our Restaurant page yet.
