Site Slowdown - July 14, 6:00PMPDT

Bill Hunt Jul 14, 2011 07:00 PM

What is going on with CH today?

It seems that all of the banner ads are choking the servers, as each page takes forever to load, until all of the animated banner ads have finally loaded, and then one can use a page.

I checked a half-dozen other sites, and they all load fine - just CH.

If I can get a page to load, it usually crashes with "Page Not Found." Have tried using Chrome and IE 7.

Just impossible to use tonight. I think that the myriad banner ads need to be checked, as they seem to be the culprit, but maybe it's a server issue?

slowdown? try screeching halt. crashed my browser twice and i ended up losing my internet connection completely...had to reset everything & reboot. argh!!!!

note to Engineering: the refresh/reload icon in my toolbar keeps flashing when CH pages are loading, and that's what was happening last week when Ruby went off the rails...

Yes. I had to kill IE and Chrome, because of CH.

Things seem to be getting back on line, as of 7:44PM PDT on July 14, but there was a horrible time, and CH was the only site, that exhibited this.

Hope that things are better, and that CBS "feeds the gerbils" running in the wheels, that power the servers.

Still, certain banner ads kill all pages. Bad choice in banner ads.

I can at least confirm that this isn't an ad issue. We're looking into possible causes; as with a number of recent oddities, this may be a side effect of our ongoing upgrades to CHOW's infrastructure.

@goodhealthgourmet, based on what you've described, there may be a larger issue with your connectivity. I'm not aware of anything a website could do to disrupt a connection. Browser crashes, on the other hand, may indicate a bug; we'll keep an eye out.

Thank you both for your report, and for your patience.

neither was i, but it happened twice - once last night, and once the night before. both times i was on CH with no other tabs or windows open, and both times it was when CH pages were loading painfully slowly and/or failing to connect. FFX crashed, and when i tried to relaunch, i had no connectivity at all. then once i rebooted everything i was able to browse other sites with no problem but CH was still inaccessible - so i figured that must have been the problem.

whatever the case, thanks for looking into all of this for us.

Well, that's a relief; I thought it was just me and FFX. quite strange.
