Fujinoya, Hartsdale (next to IHOP on Central Ave)

My son and I had lunch today at this place. I'd been meaning to go since reading a great review in the NYTimes many months ago.

This is a thoroughly Japanese place, which should appeal to those among you like to complain about "Asian fusion". There are lunch specials that change daily--there is even a calendar in the menu with which dishes will be specials by date. Although the sushi looked great and we both love it, my son and I each ended up getting cooked dishes. We had trouble choosing, and the photos that accompanied each item made it both easier to get a sense of what we would be in for, and harder to choose because we wanted everything!

Ultimately, he got the teriyaki chicken bowl over rice, which came with miso soup and a lovely small dish of Japanese pickles. I had the daily special of Champon, egg noodles in a whitish broth (not sure what made it white, but it wasn't a cream broth) with vegetables, squid, shrimp, pork, sliced fish balls, mushrooms, and four lovely quail eggs whose yolks burst in the mouth. Amazing to be thrilled to have a hot soup in the middle of July, but I was.

We were sorry we both had to work this afternoon, otherwise we'd have been glad to have $2 draft Kirins or $3 house hot sake. Instead, we had green tea and ice water that was refilled frequently. The bill after tax and before tip was $19.25.

I'm already plotting my next return.

Oh yes, nice parking lot at the place. Open for lunch and dinner.

  1. The weekday lunch specials are very reasonable, you can see the current month's by day on their website.

    1. I always pass by Fujinoya on my way to White Plains. Glad to hear it's good, I'll make sure to stop by soon. Thanks for the tip!

      1. I've been a regular at Fujinoya for at least 6 years now. Excellent authentic food and attentive staff is how you keep your customers happy. I'm glad they got such glowing reviews in the NYT. Here's the previous thread:

        1. OK, this is the one place in Westchester that I have refused to talk about on the internet or with friends for fear that the good word would get out. This place is very small and the wait for a table can be long as it is. I love that I am the only person that is not speaking Japanese when I go in and a few months ago I had a group of American guys sitting at the next table and I thought the place had just "jumped the shark". Then the waitress came over and two of them were speaking to her in Japanese!
So now it is out and I can say that this is my favorite place Westchester. I have eaten my way through almost the entire menu and many, many specials and they are all great. If you just want sushi, I can think of other places to go but for all around Japanese food, this is the place.
          Now save me a table!

When my son and I were at this place yesterday, entering at 1 p.m., there were fewer than 10 people there. Another six came in during the 50 minutes we were there (and some left). There certainly was room for quite a few more diners.

FYI they close at 2 so I would never go there after 1.

They will serve people lunch as long as they arrive by 2. We left shortly before 2 and two new tables worth of people came in right before we left. There was no sense they were going to shoo anyone out in 10 minutes.

I've been there after the 2pm deadline. They close the kitchen at that point you cannot order anything additional and they clean up and I felt hurried out. That is not typical there-- I usually enjoy my lunch and the service is very hospitable.

Why not just get there by 1:30 and end this discussion?

          2. DH and I were here earlier this week, arriving about 20 mins too later for the dinner special :( We ordered Sushi DX-B and anago tempura roll (crispy eel, YUM!) and everything was delicious. Finished off with a little green tea ice cream, which was refreshing. The tea poured throughout the meal was very good, tasted like a roasted green tea, but not sure exactly what it was. The service was very friendly, the sushi chef gave DH a thumbs up as he finished the last piece of sushi.
            Pretty sure we'll be back.

Agree with everyone. We love Fujinoya. Also wanted to point out that the service is consistently excellent and friendly. No small feat for Westchester!

possibly Brown Rice Tea; had it served the first time at a sushi bar in san francisco.

              2. I have lunch there at least once a week. I get there right at noon, or else after 1pm, in between they are usually at max seating. I rarely see anyone else who is non-Japanese there.
