ABC Kitchen or Del Posto for my birthday dinner?

Help, I can't decide! Any input--especially from Hounds who have been to both--would be awesome.

  1. Never been to ABC but HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend DP; just an incredible service experience

    1. I have been to both and like them both, however, these are very different restaurants in terms of atmosphere, food and price. ABC Kitchen is more casual, louder and maybe just a bit more of a "scene". Del Posto is more quiet, more formal and pricier. Difference in food is obvious when you look at their menus. Both are good, it just depends on which sounds more like the kind of experience you'd like to have for your birthday.

      1. They both seem pretty different. Are you looking for an upscale multi-course Italian experience in a stunning room (where you'd have to dress up to match)? Or a more casual but still hip, "shabby chic" environment?

Both are delicious, it really should depend on your preferences for atmosphere, food.

Technically, you don't have to dress up for Del Posto - while it's the only Batali restaurant with a dress code, that code is simply no tank tops or sandals. As he once said, "How are you going to tell a guest there’s a dress code when the chef’s wearing short pants?"

But that said, yeah, they're VERY different restaurants. DP is certainly more formal "feeling" and, IMHO, more of a special event restaurant, at least at dinner (their lunch is such a steal of a deal I could do it anytime...) - I'd say if someone else is paying, might as well go for DP.
